CLASS TITLE: LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER ASSISTANT-SECONDARY
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the School Principal and the School Librarian, assist in providing library services in an assigned secondary school library/media center; check books, textbooks, and materials in and out at the circulation desk; process and shelve library materials and textbooks; assist students and staff in the selection of library materials; assure students and teachers have access to library materials for classes, assignments, and recreational reading; implement the District's plan for the acquisition of library skills and library orientation; train and assist in providing work direction to student helpers and parent volunteers.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Implement the District plan to provide library services at an assigned middle school or independently at an elementary school library/media center; promote student use of the library for research and reading pleasure. E
Check books and materials in and out at the circulation desk; scan books or stamp books and cards with appropriate dates; enter amount of late fee or other fines in the computer system as applicable; process returned books and place in appropriate shelf location. E
Place books into reserve section as requested and notify student or teacher when book or magazine is available. E
Check textbooks in and out at the beginning and end of the school year; enter student information and scan bar codes; update student textbook records throughout the year as students change classes. E
Assist teachers in researching materials for classroom use; notify teachers of newly-arrived books applicable to classroom topics or themes; check out audio-visual equipment to teachers, including projectors, VCRs, tapes, and filmstrips; operate computerized reference resources such as a CD-ROM to assist students and teachers with research. E
Assist students in locating and selecting desired or needed materials from book shelves or with the use of the card catalog or computerized catalog system and subject bibliographies; maintain the computerized card catalog; operate a CD-ROM to assist students and teachers with research. E
Assist in providing library/media center skills and orientations at the beginning of the school year and as needed to impart library skills and knowledge; explain and demonstrate the use and location of library materials, the computer/card catalog, biography section, Dewey Decimal system, and other resource materials. E
Prepare and maintain records and reports pertaining to lost and damaged books, overdue books, and student and staff use of the library/media center. E
Assist with the preparation of library displays, decorations, and bulletin boards; maintain a clean and orderly library/media center environment; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior. E
Process new books and magazines at a middle school; stamp appropriate pages, bar code, and place anti-theft strips in the publication. E
Operate a variety of library/media center equipment, including a computer, typewriter, VCR, tape duplicating equipment, and projectors. E
Train, orient and provide work direction to student helpers and parent volunteers to assist with circulation, processing, shelving, and filing. E
Repair and mend books upon return as needed; assist in withdrawing books from library circulation due to worn condition or damage. E
Participate in physical inventories of library books and materials; account for missing, lost or damaged books. E
Attend meetings and District in-services as requested.
Perform related duties as assigned.

Bend, stoop and properly lift up to 25 pounds.
Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year clerical or instructional experience working with children in an organized setting, including some experience in a library or media center environment.

Position requires vision to read books and media materials, climbing ladders to put up displays, lifting and carrying books weighing up to 25 pounds, pushing and pulling carts, walking and standing for extended periods of time, reaching horizontally and above the shoulders to shelve and reach books, bending and kneeling.
