Full-time, categorically-funded, tenure track faculty position with a 185-day work schedule beginning Monday, August 13, 2018.
• $57,505 - $88,209 per year, salary placement determined by documented education and experience; maximum salary step placement on the faculty salary schedule is Step 9
• Doctoral stipend of $3,632 per year for eligible faculty
• Benefit stipend that employees apply toward benefit selections for medical, dental, life, and short-term and long-term disability insurance
Cabrillo College seeks a full-time, (100%) Learning Disability Specialist (LDS)/Counselor faculty member in the Accessibility Support Center (ASC), which is part of the Counseling & Educational Support Services (CESS) Division of Cabrillo College. This position will administer and interpret diagnostic tests and certify new students with learning disabilities; design and implement individual and group supportive instruction and study skills classes for students identified with learning disabilities; provide academic accommodations based on diagnostic assessment. Additionally, the LDS/Counselor will provide comprehensive academic, vocational and disability counseling services; implement components of Cabrillo's Student Success and Support Program (SSSP); provide student planning and support workshops, provide career and transfer advisement; teach Counseling and Guidance (CG) classes adapted for ASC eligible students. This position is part of a team of professionals providing coordinated and comprehensive academic support designed to meet legal mandates and success for students with disabilities in a diverse learning environment.

Cabrillo College serves approximately 12,000 students per term, of which 44% are LatinX, 5% multi-ethnic, 3% Asian, 1% African-American, 1% Filipino, .25% American Indian or Alaskan Native, and .19% Pacific Islander as of Fall 2017. At Cabrillo, over 52% of students are students of color and 59% are economically disadvantaged. Minimum Qualifications
To be qualified for the LDS/Counselor position, applicants must meet the state minimum qualifications required in the following disciplines:
• Counselor of Students with Disabilities AND
• Learning Disabilities Specialist
Counselor of Student with Disabilities:
• Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling OR
• Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, *marriage and family therapy or *marriage, family and child counseling AND:
• Fifteen (15) or more semester units in upper division or graduate-level coursework specifically related to people with disabilities, OR
• Completion of six (6) semester units, or the equivalent of graduate-level counseling practicum or field-work in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities OR
• Two (2) years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:
• Counseling students with disabilities OR
• Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare agencies in which the responsibilities were predominantly for adults with disabilities
• The Equivalent OR
• A lifetime California Community College Disabled Students Programs and Service (DSPS) Instructor Credential authorizing service to teach courses in college for students with disabilities
* NOTE: A Bachelor's degree in one of the above-listed degrees AND a current Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license is an alternative to this discipline
Learning Disabilities Specialist:
• Master's degree in learning disabilities, special education, education, psychology, speech language pathology, communication disorders, educational or school psychology, counseling, or rehabilitation counseling AND:
• Fifteen (15) semester units of upper division or graduate study in learning disabilities to include adult cognitive and achievement assessment OR
• The Equivalent OR
• A lifetime California Community College Disabled Students Programs and Service (DSPS) Instructor Credential authorizing service to teach courses in college for students with disabilities

Required Professional Expertise:
• Currency and depth of knowledge in the applicable professional field
• Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and practices that enhance student success at community colleges, including effective use of technology
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to communicate appropriately and provide support to students without documentation, students of diverse and underrepresented academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds; LGBTQI, gender identities, sexual orientations and other emerging student populations; and students with disabilities
• Evidence of professional activities and service beyond the primary teaching assignment
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and professionally in a team environment
Additional Requirements:
• Certificate with the Chancellor's Office on the California Community College Model of Assessment of Learning Disabilities.
• If not already certified, certification eligibility to enroll in this training by September 1, 2018, with certification by the Chancellor's Office required by July 31, 2019
• Ability to administer and interpret achievement and cognitive tests, including the WAIS-IV, WJ-IV Cognitive and Achievement, WIAT-III
• Familiarity with record-keeping software and technology, including the Computer Assisted Recordkeeping and Scoring system (CARS) used by LD specialists; databases used by counselors and SARS for scheduling
• Ability to provide educational and career counseling and create Student Education Plans (SEPs)
• Experience with or familiarity with a diverse population of students including those with ADHD, LD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), mental health challenges, among a wide range of visible and invisible disabilities
• Ability to develop and participate in program/service planning, evaluation, and improvement
• Awareness of assistive technology and alternate media services for students with disabilities
• Ability to provide professional outreach to faculty, campus department staff, high schools, community agencies and industry partners to support the success of students with disabilities
• Maintain clear, timely and accurate contact and student progress records
• Ability to develop curriculum and revisions including Student Services Learning Outcomes (SSLOs)
• Participate in professional development activities such as department and campus committee work, faculty peer evaluations, staff meetings and the governance structure of the college in order to contribute and maintain currency regarding issues related to students with a disability
• Ability to travel to area high schools, various college sites, and community agencies during the course of employment
• Perform other duties as required or assigned
Desired Qualifications/Performance Expectations:
• One (1) year of community college experience within the last three (3) years with a diverse student population
• Working knowledge of Title V and other governmental regulations as they apply to students with disabilities
• Experience conducting learning disability evaluations with adults in community college following the California Community Colleges Learning Disability Eligibility Model (LDEM)
• Experience providing academic, career and personal advising at the community college level
• Experience developing curriculum and teaching counseling or learning skills classes at the community college level
• Knowledge of universal design and innovative teaching methodologies
• Ability to utilize a variety of technology tools and online resources to effectively support students
• Knowledge of college equity issues and experience advocating and developing strategies to promote equity across a broad spectrum of diversity
• Bilingual in Spanish/English

Several new initiatives designed to support student success have been implemented over the past four years, among them the Student Success and Student Support Program (SSSP). A new Assembly Bill 705 has introduced accelerated learning objectives for students to progress more rapidly through the community college system. How do you think students with disabilities might be affected by the guidelines? Pay particular attention to students with learning and other neuro-cognitive disabilities such as Attention Deficit (hyperactivity) Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). What are some ways the LDS Counselor can support students in ASC with the recent momentum towards declaring majors and achieving completion in three years or less?
