Job Goal:
To assess and provide first aid care to ill, injured students and staff while supporting all health programs in the school office, classroom, parent groups and community.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Maintain Health Cards for each child, update annually, including immunization record, vision and hearing screening results, daily dosages of medications, etc.; maintain the health office in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; maintain budget for emergency provisions and supplies; order first aid supplies and necessary materials for record keeping and testing; keep Student Accident Reports current; assist in gathering report materials for nurse’s review; communicate with parents about current health information, communicable diseases, etc.; may perform specialized health care procedures under the supervision of the District nurse such as EpiPen, catheterization, respiratory treatments, etc.; administer medication; support school office staff; observe confidentiality at all times; maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor; and, other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Terms of Employment:
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; perform advanced first aid and emergency medical treatment for ill and injured students, and students experiencing severe medical conditions; communicate effectively in oral and written form; evaluate and assess student illness or emergency medical situations and determine an appropriate course of action; effectively perform catheterization processes, tube feeding, seizure management, administration of Diastat, glucose testing, insulin and glucagon administration and respiratory procedures with students with special needs; establish and maintain a variety of files and accurate records; understand and carry out oral and written directions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; read, write and understand the English language; maintain confidentiality; interpret and follow district rules and regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to student health; demonstrate computer knowledge with keyboarding skills; maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students and parents; be flexible and able to adapt to changes in routine and duties; be reliable in attendance and punctuality; and, provide a role model for students in appearance and attitude.

High School diploma
CPR and first aid certificate
Possession of valid California Licensed Vocational Nurse certificate
Knowledge of Spanish desirable
Voluntary or paid experience in working with children desirable

Physical Abilities:
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information
- Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, and possessing the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment and to handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job
- Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students and to retrieve & store materials
- Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
- Exerting 30-60 lbs. of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move children or objects
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to perform first aid and CPR

Hazards:
- Contact with blood and other body fluids
- Potential for contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases
- Chemicals including antiseptics and disinfectants
- Biomedical waste/hazards
- Contact with potentially violent students
