SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER INTERN (MSW Intern)

 

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the District Social Worker and the general direction of the School Principal, the School Social Worker Intern (MSWI) is responsible for providing a full range of school counseling and social-emotional services to assigned school sites.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the District Social Worker, the Intern performs the following duties:

  • Assist in assessing home, school, personal, and community factors that may affect a student’s learning and overall well-being and make recommendations and referrals as needed.
  • Provide evidence based individual and/or group counseling and early intervention services for students having difficulties with academic progress including but not limited to mental health, trauma awareness, social skills, grief, anger management, conflict resolution, peer mediation, motivation, and other social emotional issues that impact learning.
  • Assist with crisis intervention and the assessment of students experiencing suicidal and homicidal ideation.
  • Provide case management of students on caseload.
  • Conduct observations of students, identify and provide interventions that will assist in creating positive learning environments.
  • Provide classroom presentations and in-service education to students, staff and parents.
  • Collaborate with principal, teachers and other support staff as necessary to meet the needs of students.
  • Actively participate in Student Learning Committee (SLC), Re-Entry Team, Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS), Response to Intervention (RtI), 504, and Student Attendance Review Team (SART).
  • Collaborate and refer out to mental health and community agencies and follow up with referrals and treatment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

  • Candidate must be enrolled in a Master’s program in School Social Work from an accredited learning institution and eligible for internship.
  • Candidate must be enrolled in a Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) Program in School Social Work.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English

Twenty of the full time weekly intern hours (40 hours) are paid at an hourly rate of $15 while the remaining 20 intern hours per week are unpaid.
