VACAVILLE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT SUBJECT: Special Day Class Teacher CLASSIFICATION: Certificated Personnel Job Description DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY Special Day Class Teachers are responsible to the Director of Special Education and the site administrator. Special Day Class Teachers provide direct instruction to and coordinate the instructional programs for students with exceptional needs enrolled in the special day class programs at each school. Provides a basic core program for learning handicapped students consistent with state education code requirements. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Provides instruction and direct services as prescribed in the written instructional plan for those students admitted into the special day class program on an individual or small group basis, either in the SDC classroom or in the regular classroom. Provides appropriate instructional strategies and techniques to help remediate or minimize the interference of students’ handicaps in achieving their educational goals. Uses appropriate materials suited to the needs of individual students in order to promote learning and progress on IEP goals. Creates and maintains an atmosphere and learning environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students. Facilitates the implementation of each handicapped student’s IEP including goals and objectives, Designated Instructional/Related Services and other specific needs and services. Monitors students’ progress through regular assessment of their individual achievement and as needed for annual and tri-annual reviews. Facilitates the successful integration and, when appropriate, mainstreaming of handicapped students in the regular program through collaboration with the teachers in the regular program. Coordinate IEP process to include development of appropriate goals and objectives, Designated Instructional Services and all other aspects of the IEP with parents and other special education staff members. Evaluates and reviews pupil progress regularly and report progress to parents. Assists with assuring compliance with Federal, State and SELPA regulations regarding special education procedures, eligibility and services to students. Trains, plans and supervises the work of the Special Day Class Instructional Assistant/Paraprofessional. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Assists in the development of new and innovative programs, in-services and workshops to assist in meeting the needs of pupils with exceptional needs in the regular classroom. Provides career and vocational development and focus on the attainment of minimum competencies for those students at the secondary level. Assists with the acceptance and inclusion of student with special needs by site staff, students and parents. Organizes and distributes materials to be used by students in the special day class and in their regular classrooms. Coordinates special education services with the regular education program for each student on the caseload. Attend and actively participate in special in-services and staff development training sessions required by the SELPA and District. Perform other related special education duties as required by the SELPA, site administrator and Director of Special Education. EDUCATION Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Passing score on CBEST, CSET or basic skills examinations from other states English Learner authorization Valid California Special Education Teaching Credential; eligible for Clear or Preliminary Resource Specialist Certificate or an Education Specialist Credential.
