CLASS TITLE: MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Superintendent, plan, organize, control and direct the instructional program
and school plan operations; participate in staff, student and community activities; assure safe and
positive learning environment for the students and staff of the middle school.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Plan, organize, control and direct instructional activities, special programs and plant operations at a
District middle school; confer with District Office personnel regarding staff, programs, students,
finances and legal requirements; implement and modify the school's mission, goals, objectives and
programs as needed.
Identify school needs and determine objectives; develop and implement short and long-range plans to
improve school operations including staff development, curriculum studies and teacher instructional
improvement.
Organize, administer and direct operations of assigned school plant; assure proper management and
inventory of material, equipment, buildings and grounds; assure the ordering and maintenance of
adequate supplies of instructional and related materials.
Organize, direct, evaluate and supervise full-time certificated and classified personnel; assist in the
evaluation of itinerant personnel assigned to the school; assign faculty and staff as appropriate to meet
school objectives.
Assure the health, safety and welfare of students; confer with Middle School Assistant Principal,
Counselor, parents, teachers and students regarding serious discipline problems; administer discipline in
accordance with District policies and the Education Code.
Establish and maintain a planned program of classroom visitations and observations; identify and
encourage teachers with leadership potential; recommend discipline, reassignment, or termination action
as appropriate; document evidence of substandard performance.
Screen and recommend students for special education placement; counsel students and evaluate progress
as needed.
Monitor and direct proper grade placement of students and preparation of class schedules and
assignments.
Review, clarify and interpret programs and curricula; communicate with teachers to assure instructional

programs meets student needs and District requirements; apply for and oversee grant programs and
District resources.
Plan and implement State and federal programs such as Special Education, PQR, ELD, GATE and
others.
Attend, conduct and chair a variety of meetings including Faculty, PTA, Cabinet, IEP, Parent Advisory
Committee, Site Council and Annual Reviews; plan agendas and prepare minutes as needed.
Plan and direct the business operations at assigned site; develop and administer the school budgets;
assure proper allocation of funds for instructional and non-instructional equipment and materials.
Meet and confer with a variety of groups and individuals including parents, social agencies, PTA
representatives, District personnel and other authorities concerning individual students, instructional
programs and school plant operations.
Attend a variety of workshops and conferences to enhance leadership and management capabilities;
share and exchange information; maintain current knowledge of the educational field.
Conduct and arrange for staff development and in-services; serve as communications link between site
and District personnel; update staff on revised policies and procedures and implement changes; conduct
articulation activities with elementary feeder schools and the District high schools.
Direct the preparation and maintenance of a variety of mandated records and reports regarding student
attendance, welfare, discipline, safety and academic achievement.
Establish and maintain communication with community agencies and parent groups; coordinate and
assist in fund-raising activities; prepare and write bulletins and newsletters; arrange for publicity for
special events and achievements as appropriate.
Supervise and attend a variety of student activities and events during the day or in the evening; direct the
planning and coordinating of promotion or graduation ceremonies.
Operate a computer and other office equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: master’s degree and four years of secondary classroom experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
California Teaching Credential.
California Administrative Credential.
Valid California driver's license.
