Fleet Manager

BASIC FUNCTION

Under direction of the Director, Transportation; plan, coordinate and supervise the maintenance and repair of District vehicles and maintenance equipment, including buses; train, supervise and evaluate assigned staff. This is a single class position characterized by the responsibility to plan, organize, coordinate and supervise the District’s vehicles maintenance operations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises the scheduling of all maintenance and repair work on buses, automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other mechanical equipment using diesel, gas and alternate fuels. Establish, maintain and evaluate a preventive maintenance schedule. (E1)

Maintain adequate stock of spare repair parts; procure repair parts and outside service vendors and district fuel supply. (E1)

Prepare and maintain time and work records and prepare related reports. (E1)

Establish work priorities and schedule work to be performed by District and contract mechanics. (E1)

Responsible for CHP inspections and reports for Grants(E1)

Organize shop space for efficient, safe and secure operations. (E2)

Operate and drive various vehicles and equipment in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices.(E3)

Train, assign, supervise and evaluate assigned staff in the maintenance, overhaul, replacement and repair of gas and diesel-powered vehicles and maintenance equipment, including practices. (E1)

Coordinate and supervise inspections of equipment; diagnose, troubleshoot and repair vehicles and equipment as needed.(E2)

Inspect department vehicles, equipment and supplies to determine purchase, replacement and repairs. (E2)

Supervises the preparation of time and material estimates of costs and records of time and material used. (E2)

Directs vehicle maintenance personnel regarding methods and procedures of supply, and equipment requirements.(E1)

Assists in the certification, licensing, training, evaluation, and employment of vehicle maintenance staff.(E3)

Instructs mechanics in techniques unique to fulfilling Title 13 requirements in public school transportation.(E1)

Ensures that all necessary checks are performed on bus and motor vehicles.(E2)

Supervises mechanics in the maintenance and repair of the District automotive equipment such as buses, trucks and automobiles.(E2)

Assists in the interviewing of prospective employees and makes recommendations regarding their employment; ensures that outside mechanical training is available.(E3)

Assists the Director in responding to calls for emergency service, investigations and preparation of reports on vehicle accidents. (E2)

Responsible for all vehicle registrations.(E2)

Organize shop space for efficient, safe and secure operation(E3).

Performs other related duties as assigned. 


Minimum Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Education and Experience

  1. Graduation from High School or equivalent plus additional supplemental training for the maintenance and repair of diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
  2. Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of gas and heavy diesel powered vehicles and equipment required, with one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity preferred.

Licenses and other requirements

  1. Current commercial license from DMV
  2. Current DOT physical
  3. Methods, Procedures, tools, materials and equipment used in the maintenance, adjustment and repair of gas and diesel powered equipment.
  4. Preventive maintenance programs for automotive and maintenance equipment
  5. Laws, rules and regulations applicable to school transportation and maintenance equipment and operations
  6. Principles of training and supervision
  7. Oral and written communication skills
  8. Record-keeping techniques

Ability to:

  1. Plan, coordinate, supervise, review and evaluate the maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles and maintenance equipment
  2. Perform skilled work in the diagnosis, troubleshooting and repair of gas and diesel powered vehicle and equipment
  3. Train, supervise and evaluate assigned staff
  4. Maintain records and prepare reports
  5. Sit and drive in a vehicle
