Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

CLASS TITLE:  PAINTER

 BASIC FUNCTION:

 Perform skilled work in the painting trade in the maintenance of buildings, equipment and grounds.

 REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

 Individual positions may not perform all of the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class.

 Use brush or spraygun in applying various types of paint products or other protective or

decorative finishes to a variety of surfaces, including buildings and furniture. E

Scrape, sand, fill, plaster or prepare surfaces for painting or repainting. E 

Match, blend, harmonize and contract colors. E

 Lay out and stripe lines on playing fields and on parking lots. E

 Apply under and finish coats. E

 Size and tint plaster walls and other surfaces. E

 Erect, rig or move scaffolding and platforms. E

 Clean brushes, tools and other equipment. E

 Paint signs. E

 Refinish furniture and other equipment; stain, paint, lacquer and varnish cabinets, desks and other furniture.

 Make purchases in accordance with District policy as necessary.

 Perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Tools, materials, methods and terminology used in the painting trade.

ABILITY TO:

Use a variety of painting equipment skillfully and safely.

Perform on-site surveys and determine work to be performed.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

 Perform heavy physical labor.

Work cooperatively with others.

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by sufficient experience as a painter to work without close supervision.

 LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

 Valid California driver's license.

 WORKING CONDITIONS:

 ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor and outdoor work environment.

Sanding dust, solvent and paint vapors.

Driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions.

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Climbing ladders and scaffolding to paint buildings and facilities.

Standing for extended periods of time.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate painting tools and equipment.

Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects.

Walking.

Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

Bending at the waist, stooping, kneeling or crouching.

 HAZARDS:

Fumes from paints and solvents.

Working at heights on ladders or scaffolding.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE OF: Tools, materials, methods and terminology used in the painting trade. ABILITY TO: Use a variety of painting equipment skillfully and safely. Perform on-site surveys and determine work to be performed. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Perform heavy physical labor. Work cooperatively with others.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS The following MUST BE ATTACHED to the application:

  • Associates Degree or Bachelor's Degree or Higher Education Degree
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS / CERTIFICATES Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License. The successful applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment physical examination. Cost of the exam will be borne by the District. A pre-employment drug screening will also be administered. If selected for the position, out-of-district applicants must be T.B. tested and fingerprinted. A practical skills test may be administered at the time of interview.
