Basic Assignment

Do you have tons of energy? And I mean tons of energy! Do you love working with kids? Camp Program Leaders supervise and instruct a group of campers ages 5-16. This position is responsible for the following: lead campers in a variety of YMCA programs daily, ensure safety and well-being of campers, participate in planning and implementation of quality YMCA programs and objectives, and serve as a positive role model. You will be responsible for camp spirit (singing songs/playing games), energizing staff and kids, participating in theme week activities/games, and creating a memorable summer for every camps/staff. You will also be expected to exemplify the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility for staff, campers, parents, members and community.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age and high school graduate
  • At least one year experience working with children preferred
  • Sincere interest in and ability to work with groups of campers ages 5-16, as well as parents and staff of diverse populations.
  • Ability to lead campers in at least 2 of the following areas: recreational games, drama, crafts, outdoor education, songs, sports, aquatics, team building or science.
  • Ability to supervise and interact with campers.
  • Must be able to attend mandatory Camp Training.
  • The physical ability to lead in group activities and to perform related physical skills.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required prior to working with participants and must be from one of the following certifying organization: American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute.

Major Functions

  • Contribute to planning and implementation of the daily program in accordance with YMCA policies, and ACA standards.
  • Plan and implement lesson plans in areas of outdoor education, arts & crafts, cooking, sports or recreational games, drama, singing, team building and science.
  • Create an age-appropriate learning environment, which allows for and fosters creativity and individuality in the campers.
  • Provide constant supervision of assigned campers at all times.
  • Ensure safety and well-being of all campers in the group and entire camp.
  • Readily adapt to changing situations or tasks.
  • Make sound decisions and respond to situations requiring immediate attention.
