TRILINGUAL DISTRICT TRANSLATOR

(ENGLISH-SPANISH-MIXTEC AND OTHER INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES)

 

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of complex and responsible oral and written translations; assist supervisor with follow up on administrative or clerical detail; monitor bilingual/trilingual program expenditures.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Perform a variety of complex oral and written translations in English, Spanish, Mixtec and other indigenous languages including materials of a privileged or sensitive natureE; read and translate written materials including District forms and expulsion notification requiring specific vocabularyE; compile reports and summaries in Spanish, English, Spanish, Mixtec and other indigenous languagesE; perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, proofreading, filing and the recording of data in English, Spanish, Mixtec and other Indigenous LanguagesE; assist supervisor by following up on administrative or clerical detail including contact with members of the educational communityE; maintain a variety of alphabetical, numerical and subject matter files and recordsE; prepare and process requisitionsE; perform various secretarial duties, including answering the telephone and greeting visitorsE; respond to inquiries from office visitors or telephone contacts regarding the Bilingual/Trilingual ProgramsE; receive, sort, and distribute mailE; prepare input data for a computerized record management storage and retrieval system, and utilize output reports in the operational functions of the assigned officeE; attend District, School, Parent and Community related meetings and serve as translator/interpreter of conversations in English, Spanish, Mixtec and other indigenous languages as requiredE; assist with coordinating workshops, classes and seminars as requestedE; compose and type routine correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, agendas, reports and other related materials independently or from general instructionsE; maintain and monitor Bilingual/Trilingual budget and expendituresE; assist with budget planning as directedE; operate a variety of standard office equipment including computer, calculator, copier and transcription equipmentE; perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Standard office practices, procedures, and equipment; Alphabetical and numerical filing systems;

Correct oral and written usage of English and Spanish; Oral and written communication skills;

Laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities;

Culture of the Spanish speaking community in the Santa Maria area.

 

Ability to:

Read, write, translate and interpret English, Spanish, Mixtec and other indigenous languages;

Type 50 words per minute;

Perform clerical duties such as filing, typing, duplicating and maintaining routine records;

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English, Spanish, Mixtec and other indigenous languages;

Understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; Compile and verify data and reports;

Operate office machines including a computer and applicable software to enter data, maintain records and generate reports;

Meet schedules and deadlines.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from High School supplemented by training or experience in written translation and/or oral interpretation in English, Spanish, Mixtec and other indigenous languages; and one-year experience performing varied general office or clerical functions.                                

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Demonstrated exceptional ability to translate written material from English to Spanish and Spanish to English; Possession of a valid California Driver's license;

Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:

Office and School environment;

Evening or variable hours;

Driving a vehicle to conduct work;

Attend training and conferences locally and outside the district and state;

Make home visits as required.

 

Physical Abilities:

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and translation equipment;

Standing for extended periods of time;

Kneeling or crouching, reaching overhead, above shoulders and horizontally and bending at the waist to store and retrieve files;

Hearing and speaking to exchange information;

Seeing to read various materials;
