BEVERLY HILLS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Description Classroom Teacher BASIC FUNCTION: A teacher is a credentialed employee who under direction of the school principal or his/her designee, conducts in accordance with District policies and regulation, an educational program in a classroom, and elsewhere as assigned, for the purpose of providing an atmosphere wherein learning may take place on the part of students assigned and is responsible to administration for maintaining acceptable behavior of students. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: A. Conducting the Educational Program 1. Provides an educational program to students assigned, build around planned instruction in each subject which teacher is qualified by credential and assigned to teach. 2. Follows course of study specified in state law and district policies and regulations. 3. Provides meaningful, planned learning experiences to encourage growth of students. 4. Utilizes in the best manner the materials available in the district/school for students in the assigned subjects plus additional materials consistent therewith in the judgment of the principal. 5. Evaluates pupils' academic, social, and physical progress and indicates same on records and communicates same to parents and staff. 6. Works with others as determined by the principal to identify pupils' needs and consults with parents and/or other staff members in assessing and helping pupils cope with health, behavioral, and learning problems. B. Establishing and Maintaining Control of Learning Environment 1. Under supervisor's direction establishes a standard classroom control which is conducive to effective learning, growth of student’s responsibility and self-control. 2. Encourages an atmosphere that stimulates inquiry, self-expression and individual growth. 3. Provides control and direction of students in the classroom. C. Safety and Direction of Pupils Extra to the Classroom 1. Directs pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the working day (which may include afternoon and evening activities). D. Maintain Professional Competence 1. Promotes positive working relationships with students, parents, colleagues and between the school and the home. 2. Participates in curriculum and other developmental program. 3. Participates in school-community programs including parent meetings and open house, advisory committee, established under statute. E. Supervision Exercised or Received 1. Teachers are under the supervision of the principal or principal's designee. 2. Teacher may give immediate supervision over personnel as assigned. F. Perform other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: The teacher must have qualifications based on the following criteria: 1. Grade level experience. 2. Current staff development and training related assignment. KNOWLEDGE OF: principles, methods and procedures pertaining to curriculum planning, control, evaluation and forecasting, and management of data storage and retrieval systems; communication and human relations strategies, procedures and techniques; current instructional methods and techniques. ABILITY TO: communicate effectively in oral and written form; understand and carry out oral and written directions with professional direction; establish and maintain cooperative organizational and community relationships; select and requisition books, instructional aids and supplies and maintain required records; identify and diagnose pupil needs, plan an instructional program to help pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • Bachelor's degree and graduate training. • Favorable recommendations from previous teaching assignments. • Favorable recommendations from student teaching assignments. • Favorable experience with any school, community, or youth organizations. LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Must hold a valid or qualify for a California Teaching Credential covering the assignment area. Must also meet NCLB teacher requirements: bachelor’s degree, appropriate teaching credential, demonstrate core academic subject area competence (subject matter exam, subject matter program, undergraduate major, graduate degree, or National Board Certification).
