CLASS TITLE:  SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, assess and define problems children may be experiencing with personal functioning, school attendance and performance, family interactions, social problems and school-community relations which interfere with the student’s ability and potential to obtain a satisfactory education; consult with and assist parents, teachers and others concerned with the child and his/her family in planning appropriate strategies for problem resolution and assure services are provided according to planned strategy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide or coordinate provision of district services for students, such as social skills classes and anger management classes for Ed. Options students.
  • Establish with the child, and when possible the family, a milieu where personal, interpersonal and interfamilial concerns may be openly shared and discussed.
  • Consult and collaborate with school personnel to promote a school environment responsive to the needs of children.
  • Serve as a catalyst to generate, enhance and facilitate problem-solving as it affects individuals, groups, institutions and systems related to Ed. Options students.
  • Serve as an intercessor for students and their families in dealing with community agencies and institutions and with the school system; serve as an intercessor for the school system in dealing with community agencies and institutions.
    • Supervise on-going activities of social work interns from California State University, Sacramento.
    • Participate in special programs such as the Foster Youth Program or Expectant & Parenting Teen Program, as assigned.
    • Serve as Ed. Options’ liaison for homeless students and their families and foster students.
    • Provide crisis counseling and mediation as necessary.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Title VII and TUPE laws and regulations.
  • Effective personal and academic counseling techniques and procedures.
  • Counseling theory, ethics and associated legal confidentiality requirements.
  • Laws regarding minors and child abuse reporting.
  • Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws, rules and regulations related to assigned activities.
  • Normal and abnormal child behavior and development.
  • Behavior modification techniques and strategies.
  • Student assistance programs.
  • Community referral resources.
  • Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of District students.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Record-keeping techniques.

ABILITY TO:

  • Provide counseling and guidance services to students.
  • Make referrals to other community resources, support groups and social service agencies as appropriate.
  • Plan, prepare and conduct individual and group counseling sessions.
  • Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.
  • Set limits and personal boundaries for students.
  • Assist with curriculum development
  • Complete work with many interruptions.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Any combination equivalent to:  Master’s degree in Social Work or closely related field, and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

CERTIFICATION or OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Pupil Personnel Services Credential – Social Work
  • Valid California Driver’s License

The Social Worker will be working with Big Picture Learning and collaborating with district counselors for academics, graduation and transition to work and college. The successful candidate must be able to serve students who have varied and intense psychological, emotional, behavioral and potentially life threatening challenges. The candidate must also be familiar with serving students and families who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. This candidate must be familiar with community resources, have the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders including teachers, administrators, students and parents. The candidate must possess an understanding of the dynamics involved in helping shape the climate and culture of the school. Certification Pupil Personnel Services Credential –Social Work Experience in field of Social Work (MSW, ASW or LCSW highly desirable) Valid California Driver's License
