LAFAYETTE SCHOOL DISTRICT Occupational Therapist DEFINITION: Under the supervision of Director of Special Education, to provide developmental and sensory-motor evaluations of students’ to develop occupational therapy treatment plans for rehabilitative care; to provide inservice training on the role of occupational therapy, sensory-motor development, and identification of sensory-motor deficits for district personnel, and to do related work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Identifies and evaluates occupational therapy needs of students, specially as related to specific areas of dysfunction in sensory-motor development. • Administers the Southern California Sensory Integration test to determine areas of dysfunction. • Develops treatment plans and goals to improve students functional abilities and enhance students ability to learn. • Provides individual treatment to correct specific areas of sensory-motor integrative dysfunction; • Provides group therapy to selected children and classes; provides consultation to educational staff and parents for classroom and home management of perceptual, motor, sensory, and self-care programs; • Refers students and parents to related services which will aid the student’s development; • Participates in meetings to coordinate occupational therapy goals with the total educational program; • Makes suggestions toward the future development of the occupational therapy program; • Maintains and oversees the maintenance of progress records on individual students; • Provides direction, training, and assistance to Instructional Assistants assigned to the occupational therapy program; • Conducts inservice or other training programs for County Superintendent of Schools and district personnel on the role of occupational therapy as an educational service, normal sensory-motor development as related to learning, and identification of sensory-motor deficits; • Prepares written reports; QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: • Principles and methods of occupational therapeutic techniques; • Theory of physical and mental rehabilitation underlying the practices of occupational therapy; • Objectives of occupational therapy treatment and services; • Skeletal anatomy, neuromuscular function and dysfunction; • Kinesiology and occupational therapy modalities; • Principles of consultation, training and supervision. Ability to: • Identify and analyze areas of developmental and sensory-motor dysfunction; • Develop and carry out treatment plans, goals, and objectives to correct sensory-motor dysfunctions; • Provide consultation for classroom and home management of motor, sensory, perceptual, and self-care programs; • Explain and provide training on occupational therapy and rehabilitative principles; • Provide direction to assigned staff; • Speak and write effectively; • Maintain records and prepare reports; • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work. Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, such as one year of occupational therapy experience in a physical disabilities rehabilitative setting and completion of advanced educational training in occupational therapy. Education: • Valid California Motor Vehicle License • High school graduate or higher • Possession of a certificate of registration with the National Registry of the American Occupational Therapy Association of eligibility for such registration. • First aid certificate.
