For summer 2019, UC Berkeley's ATDP is looking for instructors for Lab Chemistry for middle school students and Introduction to Chemistry for high school students.

About ATDP. The Academic Talent Development Program (ATDP) is UC Berkeley's summer program for high-achieving students from Kindergarten to completing grade 11. For over thirty-five years, ATDP has been offering challenging summer classes in a wide variety of disciplines. Please visit ATDP’s website at https://atdp.berkeley.edu/ to learn more about the program.

About.  ATDP has detailed lesson plans from past classes of Lab Chemistry and Introduction to Chemistry, and they can be used as-is or modified. Teachers will be paid through UC Berkeley's payroll department. ATDP will be offering chemistry in two of its programs:

•     ATDP's Elementary Division (students are mostly from the Bay Area)

           Program dates: July 18 – July 26, 2019 (3 weeks)

           Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday (12 class meetings)

           Daily schedule: morning class––8:30 a.m. to Noon; afternoon class––1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Location:  Washington Elementary School, Point Richmond (9 miles from campus)

Pay:  $2600 per class, so $5200 for teaching all day

Lab Chemistry – for students who have completed grade 5

In this lab science course, we will observe chemical and physical changes, examine the properties of substances, hypothesize and investigate experimental outcomes, do independent research on elements of our choice, and utilize laboratory journals to record notes and observations. Students will develop their observation and analytical skills by experimentally discovering the amount of oxygen in air, testing gases for specific properties, making polymers, growing crystals, testing toothpaste for desirable properties, and performing a forensics experiment to determine the identity of various substances. Using freezing point depression, students will make ice cream and understand the chemistry behind it. As a culminating activity, students plan and perform a chemistry “magic” show. Homework per class meeting is up to 30 minutes.

•     ATDP's Secondary Division

         Program dates: June 17, 2019 - July 26, 2019 (6 weeks)

         Tentative Class schedule: Tuesday & Friday, 8:30 a.m. to Noon, and 1pm - 4:30pm

Daily schedule: 8:30 a.m. to Noon for morning class, 1pm-4:30pm for afternoon class

         Location:  UC Berkeley campus

Pay:  $2600 per class; $5200 for teaching all day

Introduction to Chemistry - for students completing 8th grade and up

Throughout this course, laboratory activities and discussions will focus on how chemists describe matter and its changes within the context of alchemy and early chemistry. Understanding the periodic table, the particulate nature of matter, ionic compounds, and solution chemistry will provide the basis for students to think about the world in terms of particles and their interactions. This course provides a grounding in scientific principles, which prepares students to continue on to a high school chemistry class.
