UTILITY WORKER

Purpose Statement

The position of Utility Worker exists for the purposes of assisting grounds and/or skilled trades workers in the maintenance of district site locations; preparing work areas; operating equipment (e.g. bobcat tractor, mower, etc.); and ensuring adequate materials are available for timely completion of job functions.

Essential Functions

Completes daily assignments as directed and coordinated by grounds keeping and maintenance personnel (e.g. cleaning, inventory stocking, furniture arranging, mowing, etc.) for the purpose of providing additional short-term staffing for specific tasks.

Maintains tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.

Cleans school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.

Assists with application of chemicals and products associated with maintaining turf and landscaping for purposes of keeping the areas attractive and protected.

Participates in physical inventories for the purpose of verifying stock and identifying losses.

Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.

Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment supplies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job sites.

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILL is required to operate gardening tools, power equipment and vehicles; to follow schedules and procedures established for the completion of grounds keeping work; to carry out written and oral instructions; and to make basic written reports concerning lawn and plant conditions; and to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.

KNOWLEDGE is required to apply approved methods of cleaning, planting, propagating and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers; to use gardening materials and to operate and maintain gardening tools, power equipment and vehicles, to recognize common plant diseases and insect pests.

ABILITY is required to perform general gardening, grounds keeping and custodial work that includes performing heavy physical labor; lifting, carrying pushing, pulling and moving heavy objects and/or materials.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES include operating under fixed and flexible schedules and procedures for completing preparation and maintenance of grounds and gardens, for performing general utility work as required; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions. There is an opportunity to impact the district’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; significant climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching and handling. Generally the job requires 35% standing, 60% walking and 5%
sitting. The job is performed under significant temperature variations, some hazardous conditions (e.g. mechanical, cuts, burns, chemical exposure, high decibel noise, etc.) and in varying atmospheric conditions.

Experience: Previous experience in light maintenance is desirable.

Education: Less than High School.

Required Testing: None

Continuing Educ./Training: Various training for application of materials used in grounds keeping will be provided.

Certificates & Licenses: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Clearances: All clearances required to provide service in a public school district in the State of California
