Job Summary
A School Bus Driver Training Course is being offered by AUHSD for NEW applicants (never had a school bus certificate before) OR for re-certifying a school bus certificate. The class is offered on a first come-first serve basis. Only 8 spots are available. The training course is voluntary, unpaid and not considered as employment with the AUHSD. If interested in enrolling in the course, you must apply online and submit all required documents to the HR department by the final application filing date. In addition, you may submit an interest form and view a complete job description for Bus Driver at www.auhsd.us, click the employment tab, then click the job descriptions tab. All online applications will be screened and *driving records will be reviewed before being accepted to the training course. The minimum requirements for applicants are listed in the minimum qualifications section.
Requirements / Qualifications
1) You must submit an online application by the final application filing date. 2) You must submit an K-4 Driver Record print-out* (online K-4 is acceptable) from the DMV (current within the last 30 days) by the final application filing date. *An application with a driving record with any point count or "At Fault" accidents will not be accepted. 3) You must be able to attend class every day for the full course or you will be dropped. NO EXCEPTIONS. 4) You must be able to read, write, and understand English fluently. 5) You must be able to volunteer your time for the course. This is a non-paid course and is not considered as employment with the AUHSD.
Applicants must complete both a Classroom and Driving stage of the training course. Tentative School Bus Driver Training Course: Classes begin Monday, June 30, 2025 and run through July 25, 2025. Classroom Instruction including Requirements for Commercial License: 3-4 weeks, Monday-Friday, typical hours may be 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM daily, unless otherwise noted by the instructor. "Behind-The-Wheel" Training (BTW), Post-Classroom Instruction: Upon completion of classroom instruction, all trainees must submit to a drug and alcohol test prior to starting the behind-the-wheel training portion of the training course. TOTAL COST (includes the following fees): $57.00 - School Bus Certificate and California Highway Patrol (CHP) Fingerprint Check. Not due until end of classroom instruction. $82.00 - Paid to DMV; Commercial (Class B) License Permit - Due to AUHSD at the time "behind the wheel"; training begins. $100.00 - Drivers Physical (unless you have insurance to cover) - Required for commercial license permit to drive. $2.00 - Driving Record Print out form from DMV showing your driving record - Must accompany application - No Exceptions. (Note: Online K-4 IS acceptable). $2.00 - An additional Driving Record print out purchased at a later date at time of CHP fingerprinting and paperwork (must be within 30 days). $105.00 - Drug and Alcohol Test $348.00 - Total cost to be a certified driver. *Please note that cost is approximate and does not guarantee you will pass the course(s).* Upon successful completion of the training course, you may be considered for substitute Bus Driver positions with the AUHSD. Substitute Bus Driver's are currently paid $29.40/hr.
