About the Employer

We are a unified school district serving more than 16,150 students in grades K -12. We have thirteen elementary schools, four middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, three specialized high schools, two alternative high schools and one K-8 school. We also offer a home schooling program, adult education courses and other unique programs to fit the needs of all students. Our school district employs approximately 1,100 certificated and nearly 900 classified employees. Antioch Unified School District is centrally located in the East Bay and provides ready access to scenic mountains, waterfronts, wine country, historical sites and the Pacific Ocean. Antioch is known as the “Gateway to the Delta” and is one of California’s oldest cities, with a diverse community of approximately 100,000. The Antioch Unified School District is a Merit System District. As such, final selection of our classified staff members will be made from candidates who have been placed on an eligibility list. Eligibility is determined via an evaluation and competitive screening/scoring of a candidate’s training and experience as demonstrated on the application and responses provided in the supplemental questions.

ANTIOCH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: BUS DRIVER BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Manager-Transportation, drive a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to assigned locations along designated routes. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Drive a school bus along designated routes; operate buses of varying sizes; pick up and discharge students in accordance with established time lines; observe legal and defensive driving practices; assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations. Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus in accordance with District policies related to disciplining students; report behavior issues to appropriate personnel; assure student understanding of bus rules. Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses; inspect interior, exterior and engine of buses to assure safe operational condition; check brakes, lights, doors, engine, seatbelts, mirrors, safety devices and other equipment; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as needed. Load and unload District students as required; assist students with boarding and exiting the bus; assure students are safely fastened into their seats; utilize and assist students with wheelchair lifts, tie-downs, straps, harnesses and seat belts as needed. Assist students with crossing streets as needed; escort students to and from houses, schools and other locations as needed. Communicate with District personnel, parents and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; utilize a two-way radio. Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition; clean windows, mirrors and bus interior and exterior; pick up and remove trash and debris; check and replenish fluid levels as needed. Transport students and faculty on field trips, sports events or other special activities as assigned; meet scheduled departure and arrival times. Maintain various logs and records related to mileage, inspections, fuel, field trips, students and assigned activities. Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines; administer first aid to passengers as needed. Attend and participate in in-services to maintain current knowledge of rules and regulations as directed. OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Safe and defensive driving practices. Proper operation of school buses of varying size including air brake mechanisms.. Health and safety regulations. Oral and written communication skills. Special needs students. ABILITY TO: Drive a school bus safely and efficiently. Learn and apply District policies and procedures related to student discipline. Maintain a safe discipline level among passengers. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Load and unload physically and mentally handicapped and other students as required. Learn and follow designated routes. Maintain bus in clean and proper working condition. Conduct safety inspections. Administer first aid. Maintain routine records. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively with others Meet schedules and time lines. Re-route the delivery of students with limited notice. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Class A or B commercial driver’s license with passenger, air brake and school bus endorsements. Valid First Aid and CPR Certification issued by an authorized agency. Maintain good driving record. Valid Medical Card. Valid California Special Driver certificate for school bus. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: School bus and outdoor environment. Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease and gases. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sitting for extended periods of time while operating buses. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Reaching, pulling and pushing to open bus doors and move wheel chairs. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to inspect and wash buses. Climbing ladders or steps. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders or horizontally. Seeing to monitor passengers and operate a vehicle. Lifting heavy children or objects as assigned by the position. HAZARDS: Traffic hazards. Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions. Fumes from chemical cleansers and bus operation including diesel fumes. Contact with dissatisfied or abusive students. Potential for exposure to bodily fluids.
