Founded in 2005, Education for Change (EFC) is a charter management organization that was created as a partnership between Oakland Unified School District and the education reform community in order to leverage the flexibilities in charter law to facilitate greater innovation and to address the underperformance of our most vulnerable student populations. EFC is Oakland’s largest charter operator, serving over 3,000 students in the Fruitvale and Elmhurst neighborhoods of East Oakland. Five of seven of our schools were formerly OUSD schools that converted to EFC to leverage the flexibility and agility provided by charter law for greater outcomes for our students.

Position Summary:

The Afterschool Program Coordinator will manage a comprehensive program at Lazear Charter Academy in Oakland, interacting collaboratively with school site staff, community, parents, and students. The ASP Coordinator will ensure a balance of quality academic and enrichment activities and provide a safe environment for children from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, this position would work with the school attendance team and support with school attendance initiatives.

Responsibilities

Program Coordination and Day to Day Operations

  • Facilitate and oversee the day to day operations and activities of the program.
  • Design the program and class schedule with input from school administrators, EFC home office, youth participants and their parents, to create a balance of academic, enrichment and recreational activities that are culturally diverse.
  • Guide the afterschool program instructors to provide student-centered, project-based, thematic learning.
  • In coordination with school administrators and teachers, prioritize students to provide them with access to academic and enrichment afterschool programming.
  • Use strong positive behavior management skills and an understanding of the developmental needs of students in Kinder through Middle School to establish and maintain a positive, safe, and supportive school environment that values learning and achievement.
  • Consistently maintain work habits, appearance and behavior that serve as a model for students.
  • Conduct outreach to recruit students and families.
  • Coordinate and supervise staff, instructors, and volunteers.
  • Ensure student and staff safety by enforcing program policies and keeping the afterschool office open until 6:00pm Monday – Friday.
  • Conduct evaluation of the program, staff and students.
  • Maintain student records and a database of students’ important information.
  • Coordinate special events, such as Parent Nights or events showcasing students’ achievements.
  • Oversee students’ behavior and incidents, and complete all necessary reporting in a timely manner.
  • Record participants’ attendance daily, and keep attendance and sign-out records.
  • Serve, monitor and document snacks for participating students.
  • Communicate about positive achievements as well as problems or issues with parents.
  • Establish partnerships with other community organizations, public agencies and service providers to strengthen the program and leverage funding, including attending community meetings for after school providers.  
  • Serve as a resource to parents, students and staff.
  • Develop and implement new systems as needed.

 

Program Administration

  • Oversee all program administration.
  • Design and maintain efficient, organized office systems.
  • Maintain open communication and a strong relationship with the school community:
    • Meet every week with the school Assistant Principal, more as needed.
    • Attend school faculty meetings.
    • Hold parent/family meetings as needed.
  • Hire after school instructors and other staff as necessary.
  • Hold weekly staff meetings for all program staff.
  • Keep accurate staff log in, sign-in sheets, and hours.
  • Regular check-ins with the Chief Operating Officer and Director of Internal Operations.

 

Compliance with Requirements for ASES

  • Ensure that the program is in compliance with the ASES and other grant requirements:
    • Maintain all records in a highly organized manner for the CPM Audit (as mandated by the California Dept. of Education), under the guidance SSCF Director.
    • Responsible for meeting the Average Daily Attendance goals, as required by the ASES grant.
  • Track the budget for Prop 49/ASES funds, adjusting expenditures to correlate with the earned attendance for the ASES grant reimbursement, if necessary.

 

Attendance Team Support

  • Reach out to families struggling with tardies and attendance
  • Coordinate incentives for students before they reach truant number of absences/tardies

 

Education and/or Experience

  • Experience coordinating an educational program, including overseeing other staff.
  • Proven ability in designing academic or enrichment lesson plans appropriate for diverse cultures and learning styles.
  • At least two years of classroom teaching experience or working with children in an educational setting.
  • Has worked with elementary and middle school-aged children, especially at-risk children and/or from racially, culturally, economically and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education or child and youth development.
  • Must pass the Department of Justice background screening and TB test.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and ability to set priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet.

 

Other Qualifications

  • Spanish Bilingual preferred.
  • Able to build immediate and caring rapport with children of all ages and from diverse backgrounds; some understanding of child growth and development.
  • Passion for teaching and working with students from urban communities, with specific knowledge and understanding of the needs of students from different experiences, languages and backgrounds.
  • Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of commitment; ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively.
  • Strong behavioral management skills.
  • Able to work in a creative and demanding learning environment, including the ability to problem-solve and manage ambiguity and adversity.
  • Sense of humor, high ethical professional standards, equity perspective.
