Position: Lighting and Sound Technician
Reports To: Technical Director
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Salary Schedule: Appropriate placement on Classified Salary Schedule (Grade: 117)
SUMMARY
Design and implementation of the lighting and sound requirements for various theatrical events in CUSD.
NATURE AND SCOPE
Works under general supervision of District Technical Director or Assistant. Work is technical in nature and requires independent judgment and decision making to insure systems operate according to specifications and meet strict deadlines. Work relationships are normally routine but may be technical in nature. Interactions will extend to students and non-professional personnel.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Position is technical in nature, requiring a degree in area of specialization. Advancement opportunities are limited to director or assistant director positions and may require expanded theater course work, including post graduate work plus broader experience beyond the technical side of theater.
ESSENTIAL TYPES OF DUTIES (Examples)
- Implements designed lighting for theatrical productions.
- Implements sound and light reproduction for CUSD theatrical productions.
- Maintains all sound and lighting systems and equipment in operational order.
- Maintains supplies of gel, lamps and other lighting repair materials.
- Is present and provides assistance at technical rehearsals and performances.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and Skills: Requires a thorough understanding of theatrical lighting and sound design and implementation, with specific knowledge of CUSD lighting and sound systems. Must understand basic wiring and cabling techniques and theory. Must understand the techniques for repair and maintenance of sound and lighting systems and equipment. Requires an understanding of stage rigging as relates to sound and lighting systems. Position requires basic communication skills sufficient to discuss technical information with co-workers, to interact with students, staff and public encountered during theater productions.
Abilities: Must be able to perform the duties of the job with minimal supervision. Must be able to assess work and troubleshoot in order to insure system viability. Must be able to schedule and prioritize work in order to meet deadlines and scheduled performances. Requires the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10 - 50 pounds. May climb (e.g. ladders), stoop, kneel and crouch. Requires good hand-eye coordination, hand and finger dexterity including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to operate equipment and read technical and safety information.
Education and Experience: BA degree in Theater Arts with a concentration in Technical Theater or three years progressive experience in a theatrical setting concentrating in lighting and sound required.
