Salary:                  $14.00 per hour/hours vary by position 

Work Days:         Hours/Days vary. This is an on-call/as needed position only. Days/hours are not guaranteed, however, candidates must be available Mon - Fri from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the event they are needed to work.

DESCRIPTION:

Classified Substitute Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the classified substitute is hired to perform service for various classified, non-teaching positions which the service required or similar services will not be extended or needed on a continuing basis.   Classified substitutes are employed on an hourly, day-to-day basis.  Specific job description will vary with assignment.

When personnel needs dictate, the Lewis Center may hire classified substitute employees as necessary to carry on the functions of the LCER.  The following are positions that may require a classified substitute:

  • Food Services (must have a valid food handler’s certificate)
  • Instructional Assistant
  • Character Development Officer (Proctor)
  • Receptionist
  • After School Program Assistant
  • Classified Rotation Instructor

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • The essential job duties will vary from assignment to assignment as needed

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be able and available to work from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • A certificate showing that within the last 60 days the person has submitted to a tuberculosis risk assessment and if tuberculosis risk factors were identified, has been examined by a physician, nurse practitioner, or local health department and has been found to be free of infectious tuberculosis
  • Candidates selected for employment are required to be fingerprinted and cleared by the CA Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigations through the Lewis Center (LCER)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluency in Spanish Language (both writing and speaking) preferred
  • Two years working in a school setting preferred
  • CPR/First Aid Certification preferred
  • Food Service Certificate required to work in the cafeteria

 WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Working conditions will vary from assignment to assignment.  The following is a basic outline of some of the working conditions:
  • Subject to interruptions, public contact and multiple tasks
  • School campus environment; indoor and outdoor environment
  • Subject to time lines and interruptions
  • Ability to stand, sit, stoop, walk, kneel, and perform grasping and handling motions and torso rotations on a continuous basis and the ability to reach in all directions
  • Bending or twisting at the waist to operate equipment and other tasks
  • Ability to observe, hear and speak clearly to exchange information in person and/or on the telephone and to respond to children and youth's needs, emergencies and conflicts that might occur in any form of program setting
  • Ability to see to read and compose written materials to include but not limited to memos, money, cash register, labels, etc.
  • Ability to carry, push and pull items such as food trays and carts
  • Operating a computer keyboard and other office equipment for extended periods of time
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment
  • Lift or move up to 50 pounds

You will find a supportive team-oriented environment where teachers are treated as professionals. The Norton Science & Language Academy (NSLA) is a Dual Immersion school which can best be described as a a method of instruction where students are taught during the course of the school day in two languages by the classroom instructor . At the NSLA, the two languages are Spanish and English. The model calls for the target language(Spanish) to be utilized for 90% of the day in Kindergarten, and then to decrease by 10% each year until the students are taught 50/50 Spanish and English by the teacher each day.
