DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK Under general supervision of the Director of Transportation, the Bus Driver drives a school bus and transports students over designated routes; does related work as required. EXAMPLES OF WORK (Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. The examples of work performed are neither restricted to or all encompassing of the duties to be performed under this job title.) *Drives a school bus over designated routes in all weather conditions according to established time schedules. Transports students and school staff on special event and athletic trips. *Maintains order among students on the bus following district policies. *Assists handicapped students in boarding or leaving bus and escorts others as needed. *Performs safety inspection of bus prior to operation. *Monitors service records of vehicles daily. *Reports mechanical defects and needed repairs. *Cleans/washes bus interior and exterior, windows and mirrors as needed. *Keeps records and prepares routine reports. *Operates two-way radio system. *Attends safety meetings and programs. *Contacts parents regarding student behavior and discipline matters. *Conducts yearly bus evacuation drills. *May render first aid to passengers. Other related duties as assigned. NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (At time of application) Knowledge of safe driving practices. Knowledge of and the ability to establish and maintain appropriate interaction with students. Ability to learn the provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code and California Code of Regulations applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children. Ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance. Ability to operate the controls of a school bus and to drive a school bus safely and efficiently. Ability to maintain order on a school bus. Ability to learn a prescribed bus route. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to keep records and prepare reports. Ability to learn and carry out prescribed safety checks. Ability to maintain medical and driver certification; ability to pass required random drug and alcohol screening. Ability to secure and maintain First Aid certification and CPR. Physical ability to perform assigned duties, including sitting for long periods of time, performing emergency student evacuations, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, etc.. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, parents and District employees. Special Requirements: Bus Driver Trainee applicants - valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record verified by a DMV printout. Bus Driver applicants - Valid California Class B Driver’s License with School Bus Driver’s certification; passenger endorsement and air brake endorsement; a valid medical certificate (Form DL51); a good driving record verified by a DMV printout; passing required drug and alcohol screening. DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Any combination equivalent to one year of experience in the operation of a bus or large motor vehicle. High School diploma or equivalent. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (May be performed with or without reasonable accommodation) Speak, read and understand sufficiently to successfully receive/provide information to/from students, supervisors, co-workers, the public, etc. Acquire and maintain State of California certification to transport students in school busses. Capacity to remain in a seated position for extended periods of time. Perform all duties listed on the job description which are marked by an asterisk (*).

Applicants lacking a School Bus Driver’s Certificate issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles will be considered for admission into the bus driver training program after successfully passing both written and oral examinations and verification of records. The training program consists of a minimum of 40 hours of instruction (20 hours in the classroom and 20 hours behind-the-wheel) and may take place over a one to two month period. Successful completion allows the trainee to take the California Highway Patrol examination for School Bus Driver, which must be passed prior to obtaining employment. Federal law now mandates pre-placement, post-accident, random, and/or reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol screening and State law mandates fingerprinting to determine certain felony convictions. The District provides training free of charge, but does not pay candidates to take instruction or for certain fees.
