Applicants lacking a School Bus Driver’s Certificate issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles will be considered for admission into the bus driver training program after successfully passing both written and oral examinations and verification of records. The training program consists of a minimum of 40 hours of instruction (20 hours in the classroom and 20 hours behind-the-wheel) and may take place over a one to two month period. Successful completion allows the trainee to take the California Highway Patrol examination for School Bus Driver, which must be passed prior to obtaining employment. Federal law now mandates pre-placement, post-accident, random, and/or reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol screening and State law mandates fingerprinting to determine certain felony convictions.
The District provides training free of charge, but does not pay candidates to take instruction or for certain fees.
