Personnel Specialist II
Confidential Position

Primary Function:

Under the general supervision of the Chief Personnel Officer and Director, Personnel Services performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks in support of the employment and administration of district personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Manages the paperwork involved with hiring, evaluating, and terminating employees.
2. Maintains all official employee records.
3. Compiles data for reports, including payroll information for negotiations.
4. Processes and maintains confidential records concerning personnel actions, salaries, and assignments.
5. Notifies payroll of all changes in employment status: i.e.: leaves of absence, reassignments, terminations, etc.
6. Verifies eligibility for Professional Growth and maintains records of course work for advancement on the salary schedules.
7. Assists in recruiting and maintaining an appropriate number of qualified substitute employees.
8. Processes and serves as a liaison between Tustin Unified and the Orange County Department of Education in all Employment Development Claims. Attends Appeal Hearings as needed.
9. Provides verification of employment on all employees when requested.
10. Verifies First Aid/CPR certification of coaches.
11. Acts as back-up for health benefit questions and verification of benefit eligibility.
12. Prepares correspondence independently and from oral instructions.
13. Provides back-up for pre-employment testing.
14. Maintains harmonious interpersonal relations.
15. Represents Tustin Unified School District creditably.
16. Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge of:

1. Current office practices, procedures, and general office management.
2. The basic concept of Personnel Services division within the framework of the District’s organization pattern.
3. Word processing and basic computer skills.
4. Proper English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

Ability to:

1. Effectively deal with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise, and firmness.
2. Learn specific policies, laws, rules, and regulations of the District.
3. Work effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions and deadlines.
4. Handle routine office procedures on own initiative, using good judgment.

Education/Training:

1. High school graduation or equivalent.
2. Five years if varied and responsible secretarial work.
3. College course work desirable.
