INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT I


BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of a certificated teacher, assist in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; tutor students in assigned subject areas; perform routine clerical and supportive duties.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacherE; monitor and supervise student drills, practices, and study activitiesE; prepare lessons as directed by the teacherE; administer, monitor and score a variety of testsE; rephrase materials and explain instructions and wordsE; observe and control behavior of students according to approved proceduresE; report progress regarding student performance and behaviorE; perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording gradesE; prepare and maintain student records and files as necessaryE; maintain the confidentiality of student information according to established guidelinesE; provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibitsE; operate audio-visual and educational training equipmentE; requisition, distribute, and maintain appropriate inventory of instructional materials, supplies, and equipmentE; administer routine first aidE; direct students into safe learning and play activitiesE; assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices according to approved proceduresE; direct group activities of studentsE; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activitiesE; accompany students on field trips as assigned; participate in staff meetings, inservice training programs and parent conferences as assignedE; confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs; perform related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Basic child guidance principles and practices;

Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading;

Safe practices in classroom and playground activities;

Basic instructional methods and techniques;

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary;

Oral and written communication skills;

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy;

Basic recordkeeping techniques;

Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct;

Operation of office machines and keyboard equipment.


Ability to:

Assist with the instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment;

Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher;

Set up and perform laboratory experiments and demonstrations under direction;

Print and write legibly;

Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately;

Understand and follow oral and written directions;

Learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties;

Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups;

Communicate effectively with children and adults;

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others;

Work confidentially with discretion;

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Supervise and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures;

Operate instructional and office equipment.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to:  Graduation from High School supplemented by training or coursework in child growth and development, instructional technology, or a closely related field and one year of paid or volunteer experience working with multi-age groups of children in an organized setting.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:

Indoor and outdoor work environment;

Light background noise.


Physical Abilities:

Hearing and speaking to exchange information;

Sitting or standing for extended periods of time;

Bending at the waist and kneeling or crouching to provide assistance to students;

Seeing to read assignments and to monitor student activities.


Hazards:

Potential exposure to communicable diseases and contact with blood and other body fluids.

The Instructional Assistant I will work at a designated Preschool within Santa Maria-Bonita School District. In order to work in the Preschool, the Instructional Assistant I must have obtained at least 6 units of Early Childhood Studies at the time of applying.

  • Copy of Transcript (12 Units of Early Childhood Studies)
  • Proof of HS Graduation (Copy of High School Diploma, GED, Official Transcripts, or Equivalent)
