Math Specialist

Job Description

The math specialist will maintain a program that excites, inspires, and teaches students in math.

Job Objectives

1)    Analyze successful and unsuccessful current math instruction/programs/projects/initiatives

  • Research-based review of current programs, supplemental materials, and alternative curricula
  • Classroom observations (create assessment form for feedback, action steps, and follow-up to teachers)
  • Student performance analysis, survey, portfolio of work (create form for individual monitoring, feedback, and follow-up)
  • Teacher survey of needs and desires for creating an effective math class
  • Staff presentation about findings for decision making/moving forward
  • Official report of findings for BCS Board, Staff, and Parents

2)    Learn math programs thoroughly and inventory all related resources

  • Meet with grade level teachers to review materials, grade-level standards, scope and sequence for math
  • Align materials with standards and action plan goals – document in formal/presentable method
  • Make official inventory report documenting resources by grade and location

3)    Lesson assistance

  • Model effective math lessons, grouping, co-teaching models using individual student skill levels/performance.
  • Create guideline for lesson structure in math to foster consistency in meeting math action plan goals.
  • Provide staff education toward math program augmentation
  • Collect and document project ideas based on curriculum, standards, and other sources
  • Develop integration guidelines, examples, lessons, etc. for grade level math and other subjects (reading, writing, science, etc.)

4)    Create teacher resource guide ( a tangible source of combined information )

  • List of available resources and location
  • Lesson guideline, student grouping ideas, co-teaching techniques
  • Project ideas based on curriculum, grade level, standards, and alternative sources of instruction
  • Ideas of integration throughout subject areas
  • Resources for students outside of school

5)    Provide resource guide to parents/students

  • Math web sites for supplementation, practice, activities
  • Local events and activities listing
  • Related media for challenge, assistance, reinforcement in math
  • Ideas by grade level and standard for challenging students at home

6)    Develop community relationships to augment math experience

  • Connect with local businesses for field trips, on-site application, assemblies
  • Use parents and community in lessons and activities where applicable

7)    Assess teaching techniques for math

  • Evaluate use of co-teaching techniques in math lessons with teacher, associates, parents, and peer groups.
  • Demonstrate best practices to help meet the needs of diverse learners and skill levels in math.

8)    Showcase math as an integral part of BCS

  • Provide opportunities for local competitions, activities, programs (such as Math Olympiad)
  • Create a mathematical atmosphere around campus through fun and meaningful events and challenges.

9) Sustainability

  • Document work, maintain records/information gathered, and outline math framework toward sustainable resources.
