BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, perform journey-level duties in the repair and maintenance of locks and related parts on lockers and doors; make duplicate keys, develop and maintain master key systems; install and anchor new equipment for security purposes.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Senior Locksmith is the experienced-level classification in the series. Incumbents serve as a lead and provide training and work direction to subordinate locksmiths. The Locksmith classification is the entry-level position in the series. Incumbents are responsible for performing journey-level duties in the repair and maintenance of locks and related parts in the maintenance of District equipment and facilities.



REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Install new locks; repair, open and remove locks; disassemble locks; clear keyways of obstructions; repair, replace and alter worn tumblers, springs and other parts.

Operate key-cutting machines to make or duplicate new keys as required.

Change lock combinations as directed; maintain and repair locks on school lockers.

Develop and maintain master key systems; maintain records and security of duplicate keys.

Repair and maintain panic bars and other exit hardware.

Install and anchor new equipment for security purposes; maintain records and security of keys to anchoring devices.

Operate a variety of equipment, tools and machines such as saws, grinders, sanders and hand tools.

Maintain a variety of records and files including comprehensive records of key numbers and lock locations, district key files and records of work orders and inventories.

Respond to emergency key needs when keys are lost or locks are broken.

Assist in maintaining master key systems; maintain records and security of duplicate keys.

Provide assistance to other maintenance personnel as necessary.

Operate a District vehicle to obtain parts and drive to District locations to perform work.

OTHER DUTIES:

Perform related duties as assigned.



INITIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school or equivalent and one (1) year journey-level experience in the locksmith trade.

Valid California class C driver's license.
