CLASS TITLE: NUTRITION SERVICES WAREHOUSE ASSISTANT BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Director-Nutrition Services or designee, work in the distribution of food service inventory, commodities and equipment from the food service warehouse; load and unload shipments of food, food service materials, supplies or equipment; assist in maintaining the organization of warehouses, inventory, receiving, storing, rotating and delivering food and supplies. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform a variety of warehousing functions including loading and unloading shipments, stocking, shelving, rotating, filling orders and checking materials and supplies.
Sign for, receive, unload, check, and shelve or store incoming food, school equipment and supplies.
Assist in receiving and inspecting incoming equipment, food, and supplies for conformity to purchase order specifications and reports shortages, damages, or other discrepancies. Assists in general support duties at food service facilities.
Assist with accurately filling received orders for the schools and administration building. Prepare and load delivery orders. Pull, pack, sort and prepare warehouse items for delivery according to established procedures; push food carts and baskets in and out of trucks and secure with straps and bars; comply with safety and sanitation requirements.
Load and unload trucks with a wide variety of school district materials, supplies, and equipment, including food carts, barbecues, and other heavy equipment for district or campus catering.
Operate a variety of standard warehouse and delivery equipment including power lifts, forklifts, motorized pallet jacks, food carts, dollies, and hand trucks.
Keep warehouse and trucks clean and orderly. Maintain the storage units, walk-in freezer, walk-in refrigerator, and delivery area in a safe and orderly condition at all times.
Follows USDA storage guidelines and California Health Code provisions concerning handling of food, food service supplies, and food service equipment.
Lift and carry, stack shelves, and vehicles with supplies.
Participate in periodic and/or annual inventories and other warehousing duties. Report any spoilage, wear, defects, and damage to assigned supervisors.
Lock and unlock gates and doors as needed.
OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: General methods, practices, procedures and terminology used in warehouse operations. Proper loading and unloading of trucks. Operation of standard warehouse and delivery equipment. Sanitation and safety practices related to handling food. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Proper lifting techniques. Record keeping procedures. Health and safety regulations.
ABILITY TO: Load and unload shipments of food items and supplies. Follow and assure compliance with health, safety and sanitation requirements. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Maintain work schedules without close supervision. Read and write English at a level sufficient to successfully communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Follow oral and written instructions and requests. Follow through on duties and responsibilities Operate a forklift, stock picker, and pallet jack in a safe manner. Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year warehouse experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Current Forklift Operator Certificate.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT: Indoor and outdoor work environment. Cold temperatures in storage areas. Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of warehouse equipment. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling heavy objects as assigned by the position. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Climbing in and out of delivery vehicles. Bending at the waist, kneeling and crouching. Heavy physical labor. Walking.
