Job Title:      YARD DUTY AIDE                                                                                 Range 11

 

Position Purpose:

To monitor, direct and supervise students at elementary or middle school during recess and/or lunch periods and to enforce school rules and policies pertaining to student conduct, welfare, health and safety.  Employees in this classification receive close supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures.  This job class exercises responsibility for the conduct, welfare, health and safety of students in assigned areas such as playground, cafeteria and classroom and requires a high degree of positive contact with students.

Essential Job Duties:

The following tasks are essential for this position.  Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

   1.     Maintains the safety and order of students within assigned areas such as playgrounds, cafeteria, classrooms, hallways, courtyards and restrooms while enforcing school rules and regulations.

   2.     Observes and monitors students play/recreational activities ensuring school rules are followed.

   3.     Monitors students while eating in assigned classrooms/cafeteria maintaining orderly student behavior and conduct.

   4.     Inspects assigned areas for unsafe conditions regularly and refers hazards to appropriate source.

   5.     Anticipates and intervenes to prevent situations that may cause accidents or endanger students’ welfare or safety.

   6.     Organizes and/or participates in safe and enjoyable play/recreational activities.

   7.     Maintains discipline consistent with play/eating area; writes up warnings and discipline slips; and/or refers problems to classroom teacher or school administrator.

   8.     Completes accident/injury reports and submits to the appropriate source in accordance with school policy.

   9.     Monitors the proper usage of all playground equipment.

  1. Intervenes and resolves student disputes.
  2. Examines assigned areas at the end of duty for equipment, clothing, books or other articles, making certain that said items are reported to appropriate staff members.
  3. Supervises students upon arrival and/or departure of school buses.
  4. Directs non-students to leave school grounds and directs parents and visitors to proper office or classroom.
  5. Performs related duties as required.

 


Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Proper English usage and grammar.
  • District and school policies related to the conduct, safety and welfare of students in assigned areas.

 

Skill and Ability to:

  • Maintain a firm but patient and courteous attitude toward students.
  • Communicate tactfully and effectively with children/students.
  • Understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Effectively supervise students on school playground and other areas as assigned.
  • Exercise tact, diplomacy and good judgment in dealing with students.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

 

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be: read and write at a level sufficient to perform required duties.

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.
  • Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
  • Require the ability to stand for long periods.
  • Require the ability to walk long distances.
  • Perform work which involves the frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 50 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 75 pounds.
  • May be required to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
