Health Services Technician II
  

Essential Job Functions:

Administers first aid, medication and specialized treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children

Assists nurse, students, trainer, and other school personnel for the purpose of providing specialized treatments, monitoring medical treatments and/or testing at several school sites.

Cleans work areas (e.g. sinks, counters, cots, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary environment.

Directs student workers, health clerks, J.T.P.A., and other personnel as assigned for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the workforce.

Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, health records (e.g. mandated screening, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.

Participates in various meetings including IEP’s for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one’s skills/knowledge.

Performs home visits and/or hospital visits for the purpose of verifying status of student.                                          

Prepares documentation (e.g. daily health log, mandated monthly status reports, accident reports, etc.)for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information and provides specialized health care and Targeted Case Management in coordination with the District Nurse.

Provides information on medical treatments for the purpose of instructing teachers, students and/or parents on various health subjects (e.g. lice, ringworm, drug prevention, personal hygiene.)

Refers students requiring further medical attention for the purpose of providing needed medical/dental treatment, counseling, etc.

Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law.

Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, crisis team, goes in ambulance with student, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

Other Job Functions:

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their health related work activities.

Supervises students for the purpose of monitoring referrals for illness/injuries.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements - Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge to perform basic math; to read a variety of manuals; type correspondence, memos, etc., usually in prescribed formats, reports, and/or speak before groups; and to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.

Skills to perform multiple specialized technical tasks.  Specific skills to apply pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; communicate with persons of varied cultural and educational backgrounds; operate equipment used in profession; operate standard office equipment; perform first aid and health care; perform standard clerical procedures; prepare and maintain accurate records; and utilize pertinent software applications.  Keyboard/computer literate.

Abilities to deal with a level of complexity of tasks that require significant flexibility with people; coordinating of other person’s schedules and/or activities; discretion, independent action and/or judgment with regard to working with people; uses and/or sources of data; diversity of equipment; and interacting with persons and/or agendas that frequently change.  Specific abilities to adhere to safety practices; be attentive to detail; implement established curriculum; meet deadlines and schedules; and work under time constraints.  Lift a minimum of 50 lbs, type 30 wpm

Responsibility in relationship to people includes leading, guiding and/or coordinating.  The resources required (people, equipment, facilities) necessary to perform job functions are of a moderate scope and moderate opportunity exists for significant impact (positive or negative) on the organization’s mission.  Work is not normally reviewed in detail

Working Environment: The job functions are generally performed in an indoor environment requiring the following significant physical abilities: reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling; sensory speaking, hearing and visual.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  1. Graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program or junior college required.  Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  2. Two (2) years acute nursing experience, involvement with public contact, and working with children with special needs in a school setting preferred.

Licensing, Certification, Testing Requirements: Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance; Tuberculosis clearance; valid driver’s license and evidence of insurability; CPR and First Aid Certificate (certificates from internet courses are NOT acceptable); California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) certificate required.
