CLASSIFIED JOB DESCRIPTION



Responsibility:

Under the supervision of the Principal and/or District Administration, performs semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work on school buildings and grounds, conducts preventative maintenance and other duties as required. Coordinates all custodial and maintenance needs, items, and issues at the school level.


Essential Functions:

1. Repairs furniture, cabinets, desks, chairs, playground, and other equipment.

2. Makes repairs/adjustments to plumbing equipment and apparatus in school buildings and installs/replaces toilets, wash basins, drinking fountains, washers, and gaskets.

3. Makes electrical repairs such as replacing fuses, balasts, fixtures, socket drop cords, switches and tapes exposed wiring.

4. Possess ability to use power saws, drills, and other power and hand tools.

5. Sets up and cleans school lunch room daily; locks and unlocks doors to buildings; empties trash; cleans up grounds; issues supplies to teachers.

6. Assists in restoration and in-depth cleaning of buildings during school vacations; supervises a crew of employees performing summer maintenance and repair work.

7. Possess ability to read, understand, and carry out oral and written directions.


Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Serves as school representative at custodial meetings.

2. Performs carpentry work such as building shelves, partitions, bookcases, cupboards and hangs doors.

3. Scrapes, sands, fills, or generally prepares surfaces for painting or repainting. Mixes paint and applies finishes to various surfaces; cleans brushes and other related equipment.

4. Maintains and orders custodial and school supplies.

5. Checks room temperature; responsible for energy-saving procedures during holidays and vacations.

6. Builds forms and mixes, pours, and finishes concrete for sidewalk, step and drinking fountain base repairs.

7. Ability to move furniture and setup rooms for special occasions.

8. Sets up and troubleshoots audio visual equipment for staff.

9. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees, teachers, and students.


Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of cleaning materials, disinfectants, and equipment in custodial work.

2. Knowledge of basic cleaning methods: cleaning and preserving flooring, walls and fixtures.

3. Possession of a California Driver’s License.

4. Ability to read and understand technical manuals and appropriate codes.

5. Knowledge of common tools and their uses, including safety procedures.

6. Ability to work any shift.

7. Ability to provide own transportation if required to work at more than one site.


Education/Experience:

1. One year of general work experience, preferably including some custodial or janitorial work. Maintenance skills essential.

2. High school diploma or equivalent.

3. Basic computer skills.



Physical Requirements:

1. Positions in this category require ability associated with prolonged periods of heavy physical labor.

2. Position regularly performs heavy physical labor requiring ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move heavy objects or materials.

3. Great physical demand for strength and endurance.

4. Requires heavy physical effort such as lifting over 50 pounds on continuous basis.

5. Lifting 50 lbs. maximum or carrying any object weighing up to 25 lbs.
