CLASS TITLE: PARAEDUCATOR-SPECIAL EDUCATION BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide instructional support and assistance to teachers and students assigned to a designated special education instructional program; perform a variety of support activities related to behavior management and classroom instruction of special education students; assist in the preparation of instructional materials and provide routine clerical support. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Provide instructional support and assistance to teachers and students assigned to a designated special education instructional program; perform a variety of support activities related to behavior management and classroom instruction of special education students and regular education at risk students in intervention programs (school wide). Tutor individual or small groups of special education or regular education students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; assist with developing and implementing Individual Education plans; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; keep master records and monitor progress of Special Education and “at risk” students. Provide classroom support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials. Reinforce instruction to students with learning disabilities and language, communication and behavioral problems; confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet the individual needs of special education students. Administer various tests as directed; grade student tests and assignments; record grades. Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects; assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance; assist students with developing social skills. Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, duplicating materials, preparing lists and other documents, processing forms and applications, taking role and maintaining records and files; compile information and materials and prepare reports as requested; set up and maintain incentive and rewards programs as necessary. Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom and during outdoor activities according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior. Operate a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier, laminator, typewriter, computer and assigned software. Read age-appropriate stories to students; assist students with enhancing reading skills and pronouncing words and sounds as assigned. Assure the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner; clean, set up, and set out toys and instructional materials. Communicate with District personnel to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. OTHER DUTIES: Attend assigned meetings and conferences. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Child guidance principles and practices related to children with special education needs. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities. Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Problems and concerns of students with special needs. Basic instructional methods and techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct. Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic record-keeping techniques. ABILITY TO: Provide instructional support and assistance to teachers and students assigned to a designated special education instructional program. Perform a variety of support activities related to behavior management and classroom instruction of special education students. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials. Understand and relate to children with special education needs. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures. Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software. Observe health and safety regulations. Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities. Maintain routine records. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: This Class must meet the requirements of the Federal and State “No Child Left Behind” NCLB legislation. Qualifications are any combination equivalent to 48 semester units of college study or an AA Degree or upon passing a NCLB qualifying written examination, and some experience working with children requiring a specialized learning environment. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Classroom and playground environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. HAZARDS: Abusive and potentially harmful outbursts from students. | |
