OXNARD SCHOOL DISTRICT PERSO 5724(A) BP CUSTODIAN Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. DEFINITION To maintain an assigned school plant, group of buildings or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner; to perform minor building maintenance; and to perform a variety of skilled duties relative to assigned area of responsibility. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives supervision from the site administrator and the Custodial Services Manager and Operations Manager. Receives technical and work direction from the lead custodian. ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: 1. Sweep, scrub, wax, polish floors and vacuum rugs and carpets according to a prepared work schedule. 2. Dust and polish furniture and woodwork; clean chalkboards, chalk rails and erasers; empty pencil sharpener. 3. Empty and clean the waste receptacles; maintain paper products and other supplies as needed; fill dispensers and collect from receptacles; clean and disinfect telephones and intercom; pick up paper and other debris from buildings and grounds. 4. Clean, scrub and disinfect rest rooms; wash windows and walls; polish metal work, clean sinks, mirrors and other bathroom fixtures. 5. Perform minor maintenance of custodial equipment and materials; maintain various classroom and rest rooms supplies, including paper products, soap and related items. 6. Adjust and arrange furniture and equipment; set up auditorium or classrooms for special events and meetings; move YRE carts, teacher desks, file cabinets and other miscellaneous furnishings on track-out days. 7. Perform minor maintenance and non-technical repairs such as replacing fluorescent or incandescent bulbs or adjusting venetian blinds and light fixtures. 8. Perform security duties relating to the buildings and grounds during assigned times; lock and unlock doors and gates; set alarm; turn lights off; report damage or unsafe conditions as appropriate. 9. Report problems or concerns to the lead custodian or custodian services supervisor; confer with lead custodian or custodian services supervisor regarding schedule and any special needs. 10. Perform general clean up at job site; follow good health and safety practices. 11. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, chalkboards, carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures. Cleaning materials, disinfectants and equipment used in custodial work. Methods of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Specialized tools and methods used in cleaning. Methods of minor preventive maintenance Principles and practices of health and safety regulations. Ability to: Learn the schedules, procedures and use of custodial tools. Use common cleaning equipment and materials in a safe and efficient manner. Perform minor repairs as assigned. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities Sweep, scrub, polish, strip and seal wax floors, dust, vacuum, empty waste receptacle, and perform other routine cleaning duties. Provide information and assistance to parents, the general public and other staff members in a helpful, courteous and timely manner. Lift up to 70 lbs. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain confidentiality of privileged information obtained in the course of work. Work independently with limited supervision. Plan and organize work to meet changing priorities. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Follow good health and safety principles and practices. Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: One year of custodian experience is desirable. Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. WORKING CONDITIONS Environmental Conditions: School or shop environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, chemicals. Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for heavy lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, pushing, pulling, walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; work on uneven or slippery surfaces; operating motorized equipment or vehicles; near visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; manual dexterity to operate a telephone; lift horizontally and vertically.
