GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the general supervision of District administrators, a school principal, or a designated staff member, an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Tutor assists and tutors students on a variety of academic subjects, with the objective of improving students’ performance in the assigned academic subjects.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

An AVID Tutor is distinguished from Instructional Assistant in that an AVID Tutor applies AVID-based strategies to enhance academic performance of assigned students within the AVID program.  In addition, an AVID Tutor must maintain active enrollment as a college/university student. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

1.   Assists with the preparation, reinforcement, and presentation of materials related to the instructional programs in the following subject areas: mathematics, English, foreign language, social science and/or sciences.

2.   Conducts mini-lessons in the process of writing in multiple subjects, study skills, and other academic aspects.

3.   Provides students with individualized or small group instruction to supplement teacher presentations.

4.   Provides academic support to assigned students.

5.   Reports students’ progress to specified staff.

6.   Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other duties:

1.   Reports absences and tardiness to specified staff.

2.   Encourages students to continue their education, and pursue post-secondary education.

3.   Distributes and collects textbooks, test booklets, learning packets and other instructional materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

1.   Instruction delivery methods.

2.   Effective communication methods, in both writing and orally.

3.   Core AVID curriculum, including WICOR, Cornell note taking and Socratic seminars.

4.   Assigned academic subjects, including mathematics and language subjects.

5.   Elementary and Secondary school environment.

6.   AVID program goals and objectives.

Ability to:

1.   Serve as a role model for students.

2.   Follow written and oral instructions.

3.   Apply basic tutoring methods.

4.   Teach specific strategies for critical thinking and higher-level inquiry.

5.   Provide meaningful and motivating professional development.

6.   Follow assigned course plan.

7.   Use computers and other equipment related to assigned tasks.

8.   Effectively organize and prioritize workload.

9.   Write clear, concise reports, lesson plans and other materials.

10. Deliver oral presentations in a logical and persuasive manner.

11. Dress appropriately in accordance with the work environment.

12. Work effectively with others.

Training and Experience:

Experience:

1.   Six months of similar work experience is preferred.

Education:

1.   Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency or higher; and, proof of current enrollment status at a post-secondary academic institution accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

1.   Some assignments may require the ability to speak and write in a designated second language.

2.   Pursuant to CA Education Code 45361.5, and the Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, known as the No Child Behind Act, paraprofessionals who assist in classroom instruction and may be hired using Title I funds, must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete two years of higher education studies;
  • Or, obtain an Associate’s degree or higher;
  • Or, pass a rigorous exam that demonstrates they have the knowledge of, and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing and mathematics.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl.
  • Perform light physical exertion.
  • Lift and carry 15 pounds.
  • Reach in all directions.
  • Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures
