Job Summary
Under the immediate direction of the Superintendent and/or designee, the Director of Technology reports directly to the Administrator of Instruction Support Services to plan, organize, and direct the District’s Technology and Systems departmental functions; assure successful computing, networking, and data communications among and between theschool sites and departments; collaborate with the Administrator of Instruction Support Services on supervision and the evaluation of the performance of Technology staff; budgeting for the Information Technology and Systems department; provide direction and support for IT solutions that align with the District’s mission, goals, and objectives.
Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, business, public administration, or related field and five years of experience in information technology management, such as the development, installation and maintenance of information systems, LAN/WAN networks, or the application of educational technology in the classroom. At least five years of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity. California Educational Technology Professional Association (CETPA) Chief Technology Officer certification is highly desirable.
Knowledge of: Planning organization and direction of the Information Technology Department and current and new technologies related to information technology; Current computer systems, software, apps, and related technology; Principles of local area network and wide area networks and protocols; Effective techniques for assessing and analyzing user needs and recommending hardware and software solutions; Preventative maintenance principles, policies and programs related to technology; Budget preparation and control; Oral and written communication skills; Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training; Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures; Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Operation of various computers, operating systems and software,including the Internet; Understanding of Smarter Balanced/CAASPP Assessments; Knowledge of Common Core and it’s technological components.
Ability to: Plan, organize, control, and direct the District’s information technology program; perform advanced professional-level work in management information systems; Manage multiple concurrent projects; Present ideas in business-friendly language; Coordinate the selection and utilization of computer hardware and software, and related technology for the District’s Instructional and administrative needs; Assure successful computing/networkingcommunications among and between the various instructional departments, school sites, and District Office; Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures; Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; Operate a computer and assigned office equipment; Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; Meet schedules and time lines; Work independently with little direction; Plan and organize work; Prepare comprehensive narrative and statistical reports; Direct the maintenance of a variety of reports and files related to assigned activities.
Responsibilities
• Plans, organizes, and directs the District’s Information Technology departmental functions
• Provides technical support for users of computer systems District-wide; responds to requests for technological assistance from District personnel; works with sites and departments to assure optimum acquisition, installation, maintenance, utilization and security of available technology
• Directs, supervises, trains and evaluates the performance of the Technology staff
• Assures successful computing, networking, electronics, and data communications among school sites and District departments
• Provides direction and support for IT solutions that align with the District’s mission, goals, and objectives; works closely with other department administrators to identify, recommend, develop, implement and support effective technology solutions
• Collaborates with department and site personnel to answer questions, solve existing problems, pro-actively anticipate potential problems, and develop solutions; provides information concerning department functions. consults with department managers to develop system solutions consistent with organizational objectives
• Directs and participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of computer and networked systems, programs, and related procedures to ensure maximum utilization of computer and networked equipment
• Works with the Director of Finance to develop bid requirements for all hardware and software upgrades; assists with bid specifications; reviews submitted bids for compliance with stated requirements
• Overseas provision of end-user services, including help desk and technical support services
• Plans and coordinates the setup of file servers, workstations, and workgroup printers and the installation and maintenance of local area and wide area networks, including designing, configuring, managing and troubleshooting the system; maintains the operational integrity of the District’s computing network systems
• Coordinates support of all District computer equipment used in administrative, business and educational settings
• Evaluates departmental progress in meeting commitments and schedules implementing corrective actions as necessary
• Meets periodically with department and school administrators to ensure satisfaction with support
• Plans and coordinates the established and maintenance of local area and wide area networks, including designing, managing and troubleshooting the systems
• Ensures that District-wide needs are assessed, that available hardware, software, staff and services are utilized efficiently, and that District computer users are supported and trained
• Maintains a system for backup and recovery of administrative, student, and educational data
• Directs the preparation and maintenance of a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records and files
• Performs related duties as assigned
• Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of this job description are the following essential physical requirements:
