JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT/S: the job of “Bus Driver” is done for the purpose/s of transporting students over scheduled routes and/or special excursions; enforcing rules, regulations, and laws to maintain safety during transport; ensuring vehicle is in a safe operating condition and ensuring safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses. The ob “Custodian” is done for the purpose/s of maintaining a sanitary and safe facility; providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss of liability exposure.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • BD: Drives school buses and/or vans for the purpose of transporting students over scheduled routes and/or special excursions.
  • BD: Informs school personnel of practices and incidents (e.g. rules, regulations, laws, procedures) for the purpose of providing information or follow up action and/or proper procedures.
  • BD: Directs students regarding safety for the purpose of enforcing rules, regulations, laws and safety.
  • BD: Inspects assigned vehicles i.e. brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, exterior conditions, etc. for the purpose of assuring vehicle is in a safe operating condition.
  • BD: Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • BD: Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior/exterior for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle.
  • BD: Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe ingress and egress from buses, including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • BD: Assesses potential emergency situations for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect the well being of passengers.
  • BD: Attends training for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting required school bus certificate.
  • CU: Cleans school facilities e.g. classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc. for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • CU: Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items as needed to properly maintain facilities.
  • CU: Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events.
  • CU: Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at work site.
  • CU: Informs students, other site personnel, supervisor for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities.
  • CU: Delivers a variety of items e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc. for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.
  • CU: Performs monthly site safety inspections.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • BD: Fuels assigned work vehicle for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition.
  • CU: Repairs furniture and equipment for the purpose of ensuring items are available and are in a safe working condition.
  • CU: Performs basic school site repairs.

JOB REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience Required: Prior job related experience in school or institutional setting.
  • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
    • § BD: Skills to operate school buses and vans in a safe manner; effectively communicate; evaluate schedules and meet deadlines; administer first aide.
    • § BD: Knowledge of vehicle operation and basic maintenance requirements and driving code.
    • § BD: Abilities to sit for extended periods of time, understand carry out oral and written instructions; work independently; make common sense decisions in potential critical situations. Significant physical abilities include reaching/handling; talking/hearing conversations and other sounds; near/far visual acuity/depth perception/visual accommodation.
  • Education Required:  High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required: Valid Class BP driver’s license (BD), Valid driver’s license (CU) and evidence of insurability, School Bus Driver’s Certificate (BD), TB Test clearance, Criminal Justice Fingerprint clearance, Drug Testing clearance (BD), First Aid Certificate (BD). Physical “DL51A” (BD). “Stress Lifting” test pre-employment-post interview.
