Quarry Lane School, the only private, independent IB World School in the San Francisco East Bay Area serving students in grades Jr.K through 12, seeks to hire a College Counselor. The College Counselor supports the school's mission by preparing students to make well-informed decisions regarding the college process. The college counselor must be passionate about secondary and post-secondary education as well as building positive relationships with high school students and families. The college counselor must be willing and eager to be an active member in the life of the school, which will periodically include evening and weekend commitments. The college counselor must successfully manage the varied demands and intensities of a busy office, appreciate working in a collaborative environment, and possess strength in both written and oral communication. The college counselor is a self-starter who is detail-oriented, flexible and creative, responsible and professional, and comfortable with counseling students and families during an exciting but sometimes anxious and uncertain time. This position may require work outside the published school calendar.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Guiding students in grades 8 through 12 (and their parents) in the entire college selection process, and application and admission procedures.
* Conducting college counseling classes, individual and small group sessions, and evening programs in all areas of college counseling.
* Empower each student so that he or she is able to make thoughtful and well-informed decisions
* Craft a personalized standardized testing plan that best aligns with each student's skills and coordinate student preparation for standardized tests when appropriate
* Develop long-term relationships and trust with colleges and universities
* Represent and present Quarry Lane School to colleges and universities
* Advocate for students throughout the college application and admissions process
* Stay current with changes in the counseling profession and the field of higher education
* Oversees and coordinates the faculty writing of recommendations for students applying to college, and teaches new faculty members how to write recommendations.
* Provides students and their parents with informative and up-to-date College Counseling resources and makes recommendations for extracurricular and summer activities.
* Uses existing resources to help students to find resources for scholarships and financial aid for colleges and universities
* Invites and coordinates college visitors to Quarry Lane School.
* Continues to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with college admission staffs.
* Represents the school at relevant state and national conferences and workshops, including but not limited to, NACAC.
* Guiding students and parents through the process in both individual and family meetings
* Presenting to parents and students on a variety of college admission topics
* Writing compelling and comprehensive school letters for up to half of the senior class and providing letters of recommendation for non-seniors applying to summer programs and scholarships.
* Providing support to students in writing college essays and completing applications
* Teaching college counseling curriculum to sophomores, juniors and seniors in small group meetings
* Planning and coordinating college counseling programs/events for students and parents
* Developing and maintaining strong ties with college admission officers
* Managing and overseeing the entire CAS process, which is associated with the IB Diploma program.
* Participating in the life of the School
Strong candidates will possess:
* Bachelor's degree is required, Master's degree is preferred
* At least four years of experience in selective college admissions and/or a strong background in college counseling in independent schools
* Extensive and in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the college admissions and financial aid processes and an understanding of the current college admissions landscape
* Obvious enthusiasm for working with adolescents
* A positive attitude and desire to work collaboratively with colleagues and families
* Strong sense of initiative, purpose, perspective and humor
* Exceptional analytical and narrative writing skills, including the ability to craft illuminating and compelling letters of recommendation
* Enjoys and understands the requirements of providing guidance to an international student community.
* Active participation in local and national associations, such as NACAC, and College Board, as well as interest in attending college tours and working and volunteering with colleagues in the counseling and admissions fields.
* Ability to speak Mandarin is desired
