Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   
Basic Function: Under the direction of the Principal and the Director of Special Education, teach children with various disabling conditions. Representative Duties: • Deliver a daily academic program to pupils in a special class on a regular school campus. • Develop individual and group behavior management programs. • Develop and implement individualized educational programs in cooperation with parents and other team members. • Plan and implement appropriate integration experiences for pupils. • Provide individualized instruction in appropriate areas of pre-academics/academics, language, self-help, motor, pre-vocational, and socialization skills as appropriate. • Collaborate, as needed, with other professionals involved in the program for the child with disabilities, such as Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, Psychologists, and regular classroom teachers. • Communicate with parents. • Assess, create, adapt and apply learning methods and materials to meet needs of the children. • Train and guide Special Education Assistants assigned to the program. • Participate as a member of the IEP Team in assessing and planning activities for pupils enrolled in the program. • Assess student’s progress toward meeting IEP goals annually, using District-approved assessment tools. • Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of: • Principals, theories, practices, methods and techniques used in curriculum development and classroom instruction. • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct. • Child guidance principles and practices related to students with special education needs. • Problems and concerns of students with special needs. • Curriculum and lesson plan development to meet IEP goals. • Equipment operation related to special education programs. • Terminology involved in special education programs. • Principles of training and providing work direction. • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. • Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. • Research methods and report writing techniques. • Basic computer operation. • Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, lift, and stand for prolonged periods; see to read fine print and for close vision, distance vision, and depth perception; use hands and fingers to perform tasks; speak clearly and hear well enough to communicate effectively. • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. • First aid and CPR. • IEP process. • Behavior modification techniques. • Student and parent rights with respect to special education programs. Ability To: • Perform specialized physical health care procedures to assist high risk students. • Instruct special education students in individualized tasks to achieve IEP goals. • Understand and relate to children with special needs. • Operate and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment. • Monitor and evaluate student progress. • Train and provide work direction to others. • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. • Maintain records and prepare reports. • Compile and verify data and prepare reports. • Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions. • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. • Work independently with little direction. • Meet schedules and time lines. • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. • Assist children with mobility.
