Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

Under the direction of an administrator, in the absence of the classroom teacher, provide instruction, encourage student progress and manage the learning environment. Demonstrate professional practices in teaching using the course of study and lesson plan provided by the regular classroom teacher.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

 

The substitute is responsible for the full schedule of the regular teacher.

This includes the classroom day, clubs, physical education, study halls, yard duty, and any special duties performed by the absent teacher:

 

  • Implements lessons plans, while ensuring the integrity of the academic time

and in a matter which motivates students to learn and participate;

  • Collects homework and student assignments as directed for the regular

classroom teacher;

  • Correct papers and list grades for the regular teacher;
  • Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel

information;

  • Maintains a discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive

environment for all students and staff;

  • Reports all student injuries, accidents and illnesses to the proper school

administrators immediately or as soon as possible;

  • Follows directives from school administrators regarding attendance, discipline,

support system, rainy day schedule and any other pertinent policies for that school;

  • Reports to the Main Office upon arrival at school, meets with the school

administrative assistant, checks mailbox of absent teacher for lesson plans and materials;

  • Requests clarification of school rules and district policies, if necessary;
  • Leave the regular teacher a report of work done in the plan book, especially if

lesson plans have been altered;

  • Returns the room keys to the school administrative assistant and instructional

materials and equipment to the proper place;

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Safe practices in classroom activities;
  • Basic instructional methods and techniques;
  • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct;
  • Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer

and assigned software;

  • Oral and written communication skills;
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy;
  • Correct English and Spanish usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and

vocabulary; and

  • Record-keeping and filing techniques.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Implement a lesson plan to K-6th grade students;
  • Assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of instructional

activities;

  • Perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, filing and duplicating materials;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others;
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved

policies and procedures;

  • Understand and relate to K-6th grade students;
  • Observe health and safety regulations;
  • Maintain records and files;
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions; and
  • Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software.
