Position: Independent Study Teacher Classification: At-Will Certificated
Reports To: Charter Director  

The Independent Study Teacher provides supervision and individualized instruction for students attending West Park Charter Academy. Perform other non-instructional duties as assigned, according to district policies and procedures.
Essential Duties:
The position includes but is not limited to the following list of representative duties:
Curriculum Responsibilities
• Assess pupils’ academic levels and develop lesson plans for their individual needs.
• Evaluate and assess pupil progress and prepare progress reports.
• Work with H.S. Counselor in fulfilling the H.S. academic plan.
• Collaborate with special education teacher for the purpose of attaining goals designated in student’s IEP.
• Coordinate IEP’s and services for special needs students with the Special Education Teacher.
• Assist in selecting appropriate textbooks.
• Adapt, develop, and use multimedia materials or different learning styles or modalities through available resources.
Instructional Management
• Meet with the students and parent/guardian for no less than one hour per week. Below basic students are met with a minimum of 1 ½ hours per week.
• Develop the Master Agreement and Semester learning plans (SLP), which is based on California standards for academic achievement.
• Establish and maintain standards of behavior for pupils to provide a productive learning environment.
• Develop and communicate to students and parents the expectations regarding student achievement and behavior.
• Maintain accurate records of student assignments, grades, credits, and individual written agreements.
• Compute attendance based on completed assignments and progress evaluations.
• Perform other non-instructional duties as assigned, according to district policies and procedures (i.e. 8th Grade and High School Graduation etc).
• Meet required deadlines
• Use provided resources to complete and report program data.




Professional Activities and Growth
• Maintain professional competence through participation and in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
• Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
• Maintain current vocational information as a resource for pupils.
• Participate in mandatory faculty meetings and committees.
Ability to:
• Plan and teach individualized lessons for one-to-one instruction.
• Effectively work with and relate to parents and students with independent education needs.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, school personnel, parents, co-workers, and the public.
• Work independently with appropriate direction.
• Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
• Must be flexible and use tact, patience, and courtesy when dealing with people.
• Use initiative and judgment in discussing problems with the public and district staff, involving office practices and policies.
• Understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
• Qualify for a First Aid and CPR certificate and provide services if needed.
Knowledge of:
• Effective teaching strategies to ensure pupil learning in subjects taught.
• Applicable sections of State Education Code and other applicable state publications, such as curriculum frameworks.
• Curriculum, instruction, and assessment processes and how they should operate in an effective independent study program.
• District policies and procedures that govern program and curriculum.
• Technology and computer software applications relative to instruction and administration (i.e. Report Writer, Data Director, Edusoft, Aeries and Pathways).
• California Standards for the Teaching Profession.
Desirable Qualifications:
• Previous successful teaching experience and in an independent study program is a plus.
• Previous experience working effectively with culturally diverse groups.
• Knowledge of organization, operations, policies, and objectives of public education.
• Strategic and analytical thinking skills and the ability to apply deductive reasoning and draw conclusions in order to solve problems and facilitate decision-making processes.
Required Qualifications:
• Valid California teaching credential authorizing service in the area of responsibility (Multiple Subject, Art, English Language Arts, Foreign language, Math, Science and Social Studies).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
• Persons performing service in this position classification may exert 5 to 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• This type of work involves sitting a portion of the time, but will involve walking or standing for brief periods.
• Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far, vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
