Job Summary

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of site administrator and direction of the Director of Student Services, the Behavior Specialist provides support, training, consultation, and assessment to site administrators and staff in support of special and general education students with behavioral challenges. In the course of his/her duties, the Behavior Specialist will work collaboratively with other service providers, conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA’s), develop and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP’s) and behavior related goals, assist in the training of teachers and special services assistants, attend IEP meetings as needed and conduct related work as required.

BEHAVIOR SPECIALIST

 

 

 

 

DEFINITION:  Under the direction of the Director, Special Education, to provide behavior intervention assistance to special education students and staff.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 

 

  • Provides behavioral assessments, including functional analysis for referred students.
  • Develops behavioral intervention plans in conjunction with staff and families.
  • Trains staff in the implementation of behavioral plans using strategies such as modeling and coaching.
    • Provides consultation to staff regarding the application of behavioral principles and general class management.
    • Provides staff development.
      • Provides assistance to special education teams in the application of intensive behavioral intervention as an appropriate instructional strategy.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Applied behavior analysis and its application to school learning and school behavior management.
    • Appropriate instructional strategies for students with autism and other communication and social disabilities.
    • Developmentally appropriate instructional strategies for 3-14 year olds.
      • Appropriate instructional strategies for a variety of handicapping conditions including autism, emotional disturbance, mental retardation and other health impairments.
      • Special education regulations and timelines.

 

Skills:

  • In parent education.
  • In writing appropriate assessment reports and goals and objectives.
  • Necessary to work with staff members as a team player.

 

Ability to:

  • Provide staff development and ongoing training in principles of applied behavior analysis.
  • Complete a functional analysis, write, and implement positive behavioral intervention plans.
    • Be flexible when working with students, family and staff.

 

Education:

Appropriate California Services credential.

Experience Desired: ? At least three (3) years of experience pertaining to duties listed, including experience in staff development and in-service training ? Five (5) years of experience in school settings
