Job Description
SPEECH AND LANGUAGE HANDICAPPED TEACHER (ITINERANT)
Primary Function:

Provides speech therapy services to pupils with speech defects and language handicaps, and provides special training in understanding oral communication to pupils having auditory handicap.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:


1. Evaluates, in cooperation with other professional workers, the effects of a speech or hearing handicap upon the pupil’s education achievement and personal adjustment.

2. For pupils with speech defects:

a) Consults with teachers regarding speech problems, screens referrals for speech help and evaluates all first grade students.
b) Evaluates speech problems of pupils referred and selects the appropriate placement for the pupil in therapy class in accordance with prescribed and approved standards.
c) Works with pupils so selected and enrolled to correct or minimize their speech disorder, using approved speech correction techniques.

3. For pupils with mild hearing handicaps:

a) Furnishes, to those hard of hearing pupils who are referred, training in:

1. Effective use of residual hearing acuity.
2. Skillful use of amplified sound.
3. Skills of lip reading.
4. Observation of visual clues to speech and other sounds in his environment.

b) Provides information to parents on community services available for speech handicapped pupils.

4. Evaluates and makes periodic reports of the personal adjustment and educational progress of each speech and/or hearing impaired pupil to parents and to school personnel.

5. Coordinates the program for speech and hearing handicapped pupils with the total educational program of each assigned school.

6. Consult with parent, doctor, psychologist and others where it is felt it will benefit child or parent.

7. Performs other duties as assigned.

8. Keeps required school attendance register and makes periodic reports as directed.

9. Complies with State education code and district board policy.


ADMINISTRATIVE RELATIONSHIP:
Under the general direction of the Director of Pupil Personnel. Under the immediate direction of the site administrator while performing services on the school site.
