The Social Sciences Cohort offers a wide variety of courses within many programs of study including anthropology, geography, economics, ethnic studies, history, political science, psychology and sociology. This position includes assignments in the history and/or ethnic studies programs, with a focus on curricula common to both programs. Educational goals of the history and ethnic studies programs include, in part, an emphasis on the development of critical thinking skills such as the ability to use logic and reasoning to analyze historical, political and cultural structures in relation to contemporary issues. As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), Merced College celebrates and champions the diverse perspective and experiences of our student and seeks to develop programs and curriculum to exemplify and amplify the student voice. In addition to teaching classes on the Merced campus, the successful candidate for this position may be assigned classes in our Rising Scholars program, online classes, and dual enrollment program. In addition to breadth courses in history and/or ethnic studies, a focus in the following area is desired: Latinx/Chicano/Chicana Studies.

General Description:This is a full time, tenure-track position in the Social Sciences Cohort at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Social Science and Fine & Performing Arts. The professor could be assigned to teach a variety of history and Ethnic Studies courses. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which will likely include evening, weekend, and variable hours. The primary teaching assignment will include teaching face-to-face, online, prison, and/or dual enrollment courses.
Examples of Duties
• Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations• Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students• Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)• Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations• Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods• Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy• Participate in the development and review of curriculum• Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials• Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees• Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles• Participate in the college's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments• Assist in growing the program through community outreach to employers and through outreach events
Typical Qualifications
