HOLTVILLE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Certificated Job Description JOB TITLE: Counselor A. Qualifications: * Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching and/or administrative and/or pupil personnel experience in grades K-12; recognition will be given to familiarity with elementary education programs and pupil personnel services. * Hold or qualify for Pupil Personnel Services Credential; Master’s Degree; bilingual skills in Spanish and English are preferred. * Any other combination of training and/or experience demonstrating the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered by the District Administration and/or Governing Board. B. Reports to school-site principal C. Supervises employees as designated by school-site principal. D. Performance Responsibilities Duties and Responsibilities * Assists in placement of new pupils using teacher recommendations, parent conferences, pupil conferences, and intelligence and achievement testing as appropriate. * Provides interpretation of abilities, aptitudes, and needs. * Provides assistance to teachers in planning and conducting parent-teacher conferences. May participate in parent-teacher conferences, upon request. * Assists the staff in the reinforcement of appropriate school behavior. * Makes preliminary evaluation of the school problems of pupils referred to him/her by teachers, the principal, and others, and requests the services of district student services personnel in dealing with these difficulties when appropriate. * Assists the teachers and the principal in achieving the optimum placement within the school for each pupil. * Counsels pupils and their parents on matters relating to the pupils’ adjustment to school. * Performs other guidance services as directed by the principal. * Counsels pupils on matters relating to attendance problems and seeks aid of parents of other agencies in finding solutions to these problems. * Has charge of orientation programs for students entering middle school and also assists high school guidance personnel with their orientation and pre-registration programs. * Maintains liaison with secondary pupil personnel staff concerning needs of individual pupils. * Makes evaluation of students dealt with and refers to other agencies for assistance when deemed necessary. * May act as faculty advisor to student body government groups. * Assists the principal in planning and conducting in-service education experiences for the staff in such areas as human relations, child growth and development, and guidance function of the classrooms teacher. * Assist the principal in the coordination of the school’s group testing program. * Other duties as assigned b the Principal. E. Terms of Employment 203 day work year. Salary and work year will be established by the District Administration and/or Governing Board.
