CERTIFIED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision of the registered Occupational Therapist, will participate as a member of an educational team to treat severely physically disabled students and report on the student’s progress in attaining goals and objectives. The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant may, with prior approval, adjust specific treatment procedure in accordance with changes in student status. Assists the Occupational Therapist in identifying student abilities and self-care level. Facilitates student participation in OT activities as directed by supervising Occupational Therapist by selecting specific tasks most appropriate to the students needs. Selects specific tasks or activities most appropriate to the student’s IEP goals and objectives. Progresses student through treatment program, decides when to advance, decrease, or interrupt the treatment based on student reaction and response to the treatment program. Utilizes standard equipment and supplies required for treating students and instructs educational team in the use and care of equipment. Observes and documents reactions and responses of students to occupational therapy treatment and reports observations to registers OT’s. Maintains accurate records of therapy treatments performed and the duration and frequency of treatments. Assists classroom staff in tasks including self-care and positioning of students in the use and care of splints, adapted utensils and self-care aides. Implements home programs and provides instruction for classroom staff, students and families. Attends related meetings and conferences and performs related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Must have knowledge of current methodology and practices, including sensory integration, neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT), oral-motor, and functional self-help skills. Also must know a variety of current treatment approaches appropriate to meet the student needs, instructional goals and classroom support. Must have working knowledge of Guidelines Code of Ethics; OT Standards of Practice, Practice Act, along with appropriate treatment implementation. EDUCATION/TRAINING: Must have experience in occupational therapy with children with severe disabilities, including pediatrics, sensory integration and motor evaluation and training; must hold valid certification by certified Occupational Therapist Assistant Program. Must also hold valid and appropriate driver’s license.
