BIG PICTURE LEARNING PHILOSOPHY: Big Picture Learning schools believe that learning must be personalized, educating every student equally, one student at a time. Each student’s personalized learning plan should grow out of their unique needs, interests, and passions. Equally, any assessment of the student’s learning must be authentic. In Big Picture Learning, Advisors are more than classroom teachers. They must be visionaries and life-long learners. They must be willing to connect students to learning opportunities outside of the classroom. Advisors must also create an environment where students are motivated to push themselves in the pursuit of meaningful learning and growth. Students at our school complete three learning cycles per school year. Each cycle starts with the creation of an individualized Learning Plan. This is followed by 10-12 weeks of rigorous study. At the end of each cycle students are assessed via public exhibitions of learning. At their exhibitions students present their work, answer questions, and receive feedback from an audience of peers, teachers, parents, mentors, and community members. At the center of our philosophy of education is the idea that the most meaningful learning occurs outside of the classroom. As such, students are encouraged to seek mentorships in areas related to their interests. Additionally, students regularly leave campus on a variety of “Leaving to Learn” opportunities throughout the year. ADVISOR ROLE: Each Advisor is expected to foster an environment that supports students in their academic and social development and help them become mature, knowledgeable, and responsible individuals who have the skills and passions to be successful life-long learners. Advisors should help create a safe, trusting space in which students and staff can contribute positively to the school community, take appropriate risks, and ultimately grow.

Your Weekly Schedule and Responsibilities- Advisory Every day begins with Advisory. This is an important opportunity to build strong relationships with your students and support their overall growth. Responsibilities include: Build relationships with a group of up to 12 students based on mutual respect, care and understanding. Facilitate daily circles and team building exercises to build a strong culture. Promote a culture of high expectations and personal accountability. Core Subjects: Students at Shelter Cove have the option of promoting to either our Big Picture high school, or returning to the comprehensive school system. To support this, students receive traditional instruction in reading, writing, science, math, and social studies. Independent Work Time/Exploration: Throughout the week students have designated periods for independent work and exploration. During this time your responsibilities include: Facilitating and supporting students’ independent work by helping students learn how to gather and filter information through personal interaction, print and web-based sources, and supporting students as they learn to manage their time and responsibilities, and helping students set goals and remain personally accountable. Meeting individually with students on a regular basis. Supporting students as they develop their Learning Plans that encompass the individual student’s personal interests and developmental needs. Providing technical and skills support as appropriate. This may include students from other advisories, including students at the high school level. Health and Wellness: Each day students partake in a wellness related class. This may be organized sport, walking, or seminars focused on physical and emotional health. All staff are expected to be involved in providing offerings.
