Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   

BASIC FUNCTION

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of independent semi-skilled and skilled maintenance, repair and construction duties on District facilities as assigned.  Assist all skilled trades workers in the performance of these duties. 

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

Perform tasks of a semi-skilled or skilled nature in the basic maintenance trades to include but not limited to; carpentry, painting, plumbing, locksmithing, metalsmithing, carpet and tile installation. (E1)

  • Receive and prioritize work orders as appropriate; perform semi-skilled maintenance work; determine supply needs for assigned projects. (E1)
  • Install, remove and repair gas and water lines; door and window glass; fences, playground equipment, lunch tables, classroom furniture and fixtures.  (E1)
  • Install and repair asphalt and cement as assigned.  (E1)
  • Drive a vehicle to various locations to pick up and deliver various supplies, materials and equipment and to perform maintenance work; load and unload trucks. (E1)
  • Assist maintenance trades in the repair or renovation of District buildings, facilities and equipment including gas and arc welding, carpet and floor installations, electrical or painting activities and other areas of semi-skilled maintenance work.  (E1)
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment including saws, grinders, sanders, drills, and others; operate heavy equipment including tractors, forklifts, dump trucks and others. (E2)
  • Operate and drive vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices. (E3)
  • Order and maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, equipment and tools; sign on open purchase orders from local vendors according to established procedures. (E2)
  • Assist with a wide variety of general maintenance work in any skilled or unskilled trades whenever available. (E3)
  • Prepare and maintain records related to assigned activities.
  • Perform concrete and cement work including finish work as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 A.            Graduation from High School or equivalent.

  B.            Three (3) years of increasingly responsible facilities maintenance experience.

                Or

                                Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the essential duties may be substituted for the required experience and/or education.

 

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
  • A valid California Drivers License.
  • Current DMV printout.
  • Insurable by District liability insurance carrier.
  • Valid First Aid Certification.
  • Valid CPR Certification preferred.
  • Valid Forklift Training Certificate within six (6) months of employment.
  • Heavy Equipment Operators License within six (6) months of employment.

  • Common tools, materials, equipment and terminology used in the semi-skilled maintenance trades.
  • Rules, regulations and policies pertaining to the maintenance of school facilities.
  • Safe working methods and procedures.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Inventory methods and techniques.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Perform a variety of maintenance and repair work on District grounds, buildings, facilities, and equipment.
  • Assist skilled trades workers in the construction, repair and maintenance of District facilities as required.
  • Perform construction finish work.
  • Learn safety codes and regulations.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used on construction and maintenance work including forklift, high lift and backhoe.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively with others.
  • Maintain simple records.
  • Sit and drive in a vehicle.
  • Work cooperatively with others.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Kneeling, standing or walking for extended periods of time.

  • Bending or twisting at the waist to operate equipment.
  • Reaching overhead and horizontally.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of equipment.
  • Lift or move up to 75 pounds. 

 

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Indoor, outdoor and industrial shop environment.
  • Subject to time lines and interruptions.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and fumes from various chemicals.
  • Occasionally works evenings or weekends.

 

HAZARDS:

  • Machinery having moving parts.
  • Exposed to fumes, dust and odors.
  • Occasionally works at heights on scaffolding or ladders.
  • Noise level is usually loud.
