CLASS TITLE: PLUMBER

 

BASIC FUNCTION

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, perform skilled mechanical maintenance work in the repair, inspection, servicing, installation and alteration of plumbing fixtures and systems.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

 

  • Operate a variety of inspection and repair equipment including power roto-rooters, power snakes and a variety of power and hand tools; operate a District vehicle to conduct work. (E1)
  • Install, service, maintain, regulate, repair, and replace plumbing lines, fixtures, fittings and equipment.(E1)
  • Repair, remove and replace sewer lines, gas regulators, hot water heaters, drinking fountains, faucets, toilets and other equipment and systems. (E1)
  • Inspect the flow and drain on drinking fountains at District facilities on a rotating basis. (E2)
  • Test plumbing and water systems, diagnose malfunctions and determine repair needs. (E3)
  • Clean and maintain steamers and boilers. (E3)
  • Unclog drains and repair gas lines. (E3)
  • Maintain service, repair and other records as required. (E3)
  • Assist with a wide variety of general maintenance work in other skilled or unskilled trades whenever available. (E3)
  • Operate and drive vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices. (E3)
  • Weld and solder connections and fittings for plumbing repairs and repair pipe.
  • Repair or rebuild parts assemblies and fabricate replacement parts.
  • Saw and cut cement as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

A.            Graduation from High School or equivalent.

 

B.            Supplemental coursework or specialized training equivalent to completion of an apprenticeship program in plumbing and four (4) years of journey-level plumbing experience.

                Or

                                Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the essential duties may be substituted for the required experience and/or education.

 

 

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
  • A valid California Drivers License.
  • Current DMV printout.
  • Insurable by District liability insurance carrier.
  • Valid First Aid Certification.
  • Valid CPR Certification preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Principles, methods, equipment, tools and materials of skilled plumbing work.
  • Welding and soldering techniques.
  • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and safety codes and regulations.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Perform skilled work in the repair, inspection, servicing, installation and alteration of plumbing systems and related equipment.
  • Read, understand and work from blueprints.
  • Operate equipment such as power roto-rooters, power snakes and a variety of power and hand tools.

  • Indoor, outdoor and industrial shop environment.
  • Subject to time lines and interruptions.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and fumes from various chemicals.
  • Occasionally works evenings or weekends.

 

HAZARDS:

  • Machinery having moving parts.
  • Exposed to offensive or unhealthy vapors and fumes.
  • Noise level is usually moderate.
