OLD ADOBE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, BILINGUAL DEFINITION: Under the general supervision of the assigned Principal or Teacher, assists by providing statutory bilingual instruction to individual or small groups of children or students in a classroom or an instructional resource setting, and/or prepares instructional materials; and/or performs a variety of clerical duties, as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Instructional Assistant Bilingual class is distinguished from other classifications in the series in that incumbents are assigned to instructional and/or clerical situations with emphasis on bilingual assistance. Incumbents assigned to this classification may assist in any of the following instructional programs: Regular classroom, Reading, Handicapped or Remedial Programs. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Incumbent Instructional Assistants, Bilingual are expected to perform any combination of the following duties: • Prepares instructional materials and bilingual materials with minimal supervision; • Observes and assists in controlling behavior of children/students according to school/District policies and regulations; • Tutors individuals or small groups to reinforce instruction as directed and report progress or lack of progress of student performance and behavior to the assigned supervisor; • Performs clerical and record-keeping duties such as scoring tests; recording grades and taking attendance; maintaining records and files; • Sets up study and work areas, displays and exhibits and operates audio-visual equipment; • Distributes and collects paper and supplies used by children/adults for daily lessons and activities; • Operates office equipment as needed; • Provides special assistance to children/students in relation to the results of diagnostic tests in reading, language and arithmetic/mathematics with emphasis on bilingual children’s needs; • Orders and maintains classroom instructional supplies and books as required; • Assists the assigned supervisor in caring for the health and safety of children/students; • Brings health and safety concerns to the attention of the assigned supervisor; • Confers with assigned supervisor about any questions relative to the Assistant’s daily assignment; • Performs other related duties as assigned; Coordinate communication between home and school; Arrange meetings with parents and coordinate logistics. CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, BILINGUAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of: • The culture and language of assigned children; • Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language, and reading; • Safety practices in classroom and playground; • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; • Reading and writing communication skills; • Interpersonal relations skills using tact, patience and courtesy; • Record-keeping techniques. Ability to: • Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplicating and maintaining simple records; • Print and write legibly; • Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately; • Learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties; • Understand and follow written and oral directions; • Communicate effectively with children, students, and adults in their native language; • Read, interpret and follow rules and regulations; • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; • Work confidentially and with discretion; • Supervise and assist with the control of child and/or student behavior in accordance with rules and regulations; • Operate standard office equipment; • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties; • Maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties; • Learn and follow the practices, rules, and regulations of the District and the school to which assigned; • Maintain the confidentiality of school related information. EDUCATION: • High School graduate or the equivalent; • 48 units from an accredited institution of higher learning, Associate’s Degree or higher, or successful completion of the Sonoma County Department of Education Proficiency exam. EXPERIENCE: • Some experience in working with children and/or students in an organized setting desirable; clerical experience desirable.
