APPLE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

 

CLASS TITLE: MECHANIC II

 

BASIC FUNCTION

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair a variety of gas and diesel-powered automotive and maintenance equipment, including buses, trucks and automobiles; provide training and work direction to others as assigned.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents in the Mechanic II classification perform skilled mechanic duties in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of heavy-duty diesel vehicles; electrical or gas-powered automotive and maintenance equipment and may provide work direction and training to Mechanic I and Mechanic Assistant incumbents. Incumbents in the Mechanic I classification repair and maintain gas-powered automotive and maintenance equipment and assist in the maintenance and repair of heavy- duty diesel vehicles.  Mechanic Assistant incumbents only assist in maintenance and repair of all vehicles.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:  Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

 

  • Inspect, maintain, overhaul, troubleshoot and repair a variety of electrical, gas-powered and heavy-duty diesel powered vehicles and maintenance equipment including buses, automobiles and trucks. (E1)
  • Repair troubleshoot and replace clutches, brakes, cylinder linings, bearings and crankshafts, starters, generators, distributors, relays and other equipment. (E1)
  • Repair vehicle components and electrical parts and accessories. (E1)
  • Inspect and road test buses to assure compliance with applicable laws and safety requirements. (E1)
  • Periodically service and provide preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment. (E1)
  • Rebuild engines on buses, automobiles, trucks and equipment; rebuild, repair and adjust suspensions, differentials, brake systems and hydraulic systems. (E2)
  • Overhaul and repair transmissions. (E2)
  • Service and repair automotive heating and air conditioning systems. (E2)
  • Operate maintenance and repair equipment including welding equipment, hydraulic hoist and tire changing machine; operate vehicles and equipment including automobiles, buses, trucks, backhoes, and forklifts. (E3)
  • Adjust carburetors and tune engines. (E3)
  • Repair and install radiators, hoses, fuel and water pumps. (E3)
  • Rebuild drive lines. (E3)
  • Maintain service, repair and other records as required. (E3)
  • Operate and drive vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices. (E3)
  • Repair and change tires.
  • Repair and replace vehicle flooring, body panels, paint and window glass.
  • Maintain equipment, tools and shop area in a safe, clean and orderly manner.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

A.             Graduation from High School or equivalent.

 

B.             Supplemental coursework or specialized training in gas-powered, electrical and diesel vehicle and equipment maintenance; three (3) years of related journey-level experience as an automotive mechanic and one (1) year experience with diesel engines.

                Or

                                Any combination of education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates ability to perform the essential duties may be substituted for the required experience and/or education.

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
  • Valid First Aid Certification.
  • Valid CPR Certification preferred.
  • A valid California Class B Driver’s License.
  • Current DL51 Medical Card issued by a licensed Physcian or Occupational Specialist.

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the maintenance, adjustment, overhaul, troubleshooting and repair of gas-powered and heavy-duty diesel powered automotive vehicles and equipment, including buses.
  • Hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Preventative maintenance programs for gas and diesel-powered automotive equipment.
  • Operation of maintenance, diagnostic and repair tools and equipment.
  • Record-keeping techniques.

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair a variety of gas and diesel-powered automotive and maintenance equipment including buses, trucks and automobiles.
  • Train and provide work direction and guidance to others.
  • Use and operate shop tools, welding equipment and precision instruments.
  • Sit and drive in a vehicle.
  • Communicate and work effectively and cooperatively with others.
  • Maintain work and material records and reports.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
  • Sitting or bending at the waist.
  • Kneeling, standing or walking for extended periods of time.

  • Bending or twisting at the waist to operate equipment.

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Transportation area and/or school bus operation environment.
  • Subject to demanding time lines and constant interruptions.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather and loud noise conditions.
  • Subject to time lines and interruptions.
  • Uses a vehicle and occasionally works evenings or weekends

 

HAZARDS:

  • Exposure to diesel and exhaust fumes.
  • Sitting for an extended period of time.
  • Machinery having moving parts.
  • Exposed to very high temperatures, fumes and flying dust particles.
  • Noise level is usually loud.
