BENICIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CAMPUS SUPERVISOR DEFINITION Under supervision, to monitor student behavior on a school campus; and to perform related work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class are assigned routine duties related to the control of student behavior on a school campus. Incumbents must learn school security practices and procedures and use good judgment their application to each situation as it arises. Successful performance in this class requires that the incumbent be able to establish rapport and gain the respect of students, to control student behavior in routine non-classroom activities and in-school suspension, and to identify and handle the presence of unauthorized individuals on the campus. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The tasks listed in this section are representative of duties assigned to positions in this class. This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all of the tasks assigned to positions in the class, and it is not expected that all of the tasks listed are necessarily assigned to all positions in the class. Enforce District and school policies and rules; patrol campus, student and staff parking areas, and nearby shopping areas; observe and control student movement and behavior; discourage disruptive and potentially dangerous behavior; intercede, to the extent that it is safe to do so, to stop student fights; watch for smoking, alcohol, drugs, and weapons; confiscate weapons and illegal substances found on campus and in the possession of students; refer students to administration for discipline, as needed; in emergencies, administer basic first aid to injured and ill students and call for administrative and/or emergency personnel, as appropriate. Respond to classroom teacher call for assistance; supervise classroom during brief periods of staff absence from the classroom; supervise students in cafeteria; supervise students assigned to detention and in-house suspension; pick up attendance records from classrooms and deliver to office. Use a two-way radio to communicate with team members and school administration; write incident reports and referrals for District and police department; prepare lost and found and theft reports; talk with neighbors to attempt to resolve problems; conduct campus tours for new families and community members; assist visitors to the campus. Provide traffic and crowd control for special events held at the school campus, such as athletic events and graduation; control the flow of vehicles in parking lots. Wear protective clothing and use safety equipment and devices, as assigned; serve on assigned committees and teams; participate in District mandated training and retraining programs; and perform related duties as assigned. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES Possession of valid CPR and First Aid certification. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Adolescent behavior. Problems affecting students in the community. English usage. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Basic first aid and CPR. Ability to: Learn and apply with good judgment District and school policies related to student behavior and activities. Control the behavior and activities of students in a wide variety of situations. Speak clearly and distinctly in English. React appropriately in situations involving student misbehavior and emergencies. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of training, education, and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities stated above, and the ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying entrance background is experience in conflict resolution and/or working with and influencing the behavior of adolescents, or one year of experience in Benicia Unified School District, at or equivalent to the level of Instructional Assistant (at the secondary level) wherein the incumbent has gained the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the duties of the position. Upper Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; twist and bend at torso; turn, raise, and lower head. Lower Body Mobility: to walk on even and uneven surfaces; bend at waist; stoop; stand for prolonged periods of 4 hours; and step over objects. Strength: to push and/or pull 150 pounds. Environmental Requirements: work outside without effective protection from the elements as a primary assignment. Mental Requirements: to converse in and write English at a level necessary for job success; follow a schedule; apply school rules and administrative philosophy regarding student discipline to a wide range of situations.
