Job Summary

Under the supervision and direction of the Athletic Department (AD and VP of Athletics), the head boys volleyball coach is responsible for organizing the boys volleyball program, including sub-varsity and varsity teams, the coaching staff, games, practices and other activities. Applicants should have strong organizational skills as the duties of this position involve a wide variety of responsibilities, including working with parents, organizing rides, supervising the conduct of players and spectators at games, being able to act decisively in emergency situations, and maintaining order in crowds. The coach is expected to work with existing on-campus staff members as applicable. Coaches must also be able to lift and move heavy equipment.

Valid CPR and First Aid Cards, proof of completion of college level course in care/prevention of athletic injuries or possess a valid EMT I or II card. A valid sports injury certificate is also acceptable to fulfill part of this requirement. Successful completion of the CIF Coaches Education Course, or written evidence indicating knowledge of the coaching theory and technique in the sport.

          Major Responsibilities include: - Create a positive sports culture in line with the principles of the Positive Coaching Alliance - Ensure compliance with the rules, regulations, and expectations of the CIF, NCS, WACC, Berkeley Unified School District, BHS and BHS Athletic Department. - Supervise the athletes under his/her charge in their use of all facilities including the locker room before and after practice sessions and games. - Responsible for the care, issuing, collection, storage and inventory of all equipment and uniforms used in his/her program. - Submit to the Athletic Director a complete, typed, alphabetized roster of all team members along with a full season schedule prior to the first contest. - Assist in the prevention and care of injuries. It is the coach’s responsibility to notify the parents and let them assume responsibility as soon as possible. - Accident Reports. The coach is responsible for completing an Accident Report Form immediately and forwarding it to the school nurse. - First Aid Kit. Each coach is responsible for having a First Aid Kit available at all contests and practices both home and away. Emergency information should be included in the First Aid Kit. - If a student has been placed on medical restriction by a physician, he should not be permitted to resume practice or play until the doctor has forwarded a written medical release. This is for your own protection. - Participate in the evaluation of game officials in accordance with established procedures. - Follow the appropriate procedures for budget, purchasing, and transportation. - Ensure that all school disciplinary policies are followed. - Read the handbook (found on our website’s “Policies” page at berkeleyhighathletics.org). - Coaches are expected to SET POSITIVE EXAMPLES for their athletes by following rules, using only appropriate language, showing respect to and for officials, and exhibiting good sportsmanship. - Exemplify standards set by the District for student athletes. Therefore, when coaches are in contact with athletes, they will refrain from using any form of tobacco, alcohol or other controlled substances. - Provide athletes with pertinent information. - Act as liaison between the school and parents, the Berkeley Athletic Fund (BAF), community organizations and the news media. - Coordinate any banquets, awards or honors with the Athletic Director. - Maintain a relationship with athletes based on mutual respect and trust. - Teach and model the principles of fair play and good sportsmanship. - Teach fundamental skills, appropriate physical conditioning, individual and team strategies and honorable competition
